A great challenge companies face today is how to recruit the best fuel delivery drivers in the most effective way. A common mistake when recruiting is failing to establish an appropriate hiring strategy. This is often caused by:

  • Urgency to fill vacancies
  • Cost reductions
  • Shoestring budget

However, despite these aggravations, it is imperative to focus efforts to achieve the acquisition of the best fuel delivery drivers and get the ideal candidate for your company. This will produce:

  • Higher productivity
  • Saving time and money for the company by avoiding losses due to non-compliance with tasks

HERE ARE 5 STRATEGIES TO HELP YOU IN THE RECRUITING PROCESS:

  1. CULTIVATE A CULTURE OF RESPECT
  • An important key to creating interest in the company is developing and maintaining a corporate culture where drivers want to join and drive for your organization.
  • The experiences of past and current drivers may weigh heavily on potential candidates, since positive references are equally important to the employee and the employer.
  • A culture that emphasizes respect for the drivers makes your company a more desirable place to work while promoting greater productivity from your current employees by feeling valued.

  1. ESTABLISH A HIRING STRATEGY
  • Clearly determine the job duties.
  • Explain the necessary skills and functions of the driver.
  • Consider using psychotechnical inputs to measure the candidate’s social competence in conjunction with their IQ, which will ensure the selection of the most suitable driver for your company.

  1. BE FLEXIBLE
  • When recruiting, remember to maintain a certain level of flexibility.
  • If a candidate turns out to have skills that would best serve another position or area, capitalize on their strengths and experiences and make the decision that will benefit the organization the most.

  1. PRESENT A CHALLENGE
  • The mark of a focused and hardworking driver is one who seeks to achieve personal and professional goals; this type of employee might look at your company as an investor would.
  • Presenting a challenge to a candidate seeking to fulfill personal ambitions could be highly effective in attracting talented and capable individuals.
  • Growth opportunities within your company and your vision for the future.
  • It is important to be realistic, specific and honest – don’t over promise and handle the relationship with complete transparency.

  1. EVOLVE
  • Consider using a Human Resources consulting firm – who specialize in identifying and recruiting the best talent for your needs.
  • With today’s technological advances, take advantage of new tools to attract and find the best talent.
  • Use avenues like social media to include a broad demographic of potential candidates.
  • Tools like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are very powerful for advertising positions in creative and eye-catching ways – as well as finding and studying potential candidates.
  • Virtual interviews via Skype expand opportunities for applicants outside of their area who might not otherwise be able to appear in person.

APART FROM THE KEYS MENTIONED HERE, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO RETAIN THE DRIVERS THAT YOU FOUND SO HARD TO FIND, HIRE, TRAIN AND DEVELOP WITHIN THE COMPANY.

To achieve this, it is important to:

  • Develop loyalty, commitment and membership programs for your employees.
  • Motivate employees in their personal and professional projects and in conjunction with the company.
  • Recognize and value the work of employees who deserve it.

Remember that a recruitment strategy for the best fuel delivery driver will be directly proportional to the success of the on-demand delivery solution, and a culture based on respect, motivation and appreciation of drivers will help you multiply their loyalty and productivity.

When interviewed 80 business class fuel delivery drivers and identified two of their problems (pains) – a long working day and a heavy schedule. Fuel delivery drivers do not work all week: on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday you won’t be able to earn much, so the driver’s working week is about 4 days a week or 18 days a month.

Among the respondents there were experienced drivers who have worked in a business class fuel delivery for 10-15 years! Some experienced drivers quit the fuel delivery business due to the high load. Young people withstand six months, but they also cannot hold out for a long time in such a schedule.

Having grouped drivers by behavior, we got a division of the target audience into three groups:

1) Active: Drivers who do not stand still. Most of the idle time they ride around the city (from interesting: idle run and the cost of it, such people usually do not consider)

Now it doesn’t matter where you stand, you have to move. You move – some chances increase

2) Passive Drivers who do not move around the city in search of orders will stay in one place until the last.

I drove away from one place, and after 15 minutes there was an order – and you left. Where, where is the guarantee that it will be better elsewhere ?! I’ll tell you this, if there is work, it is everywhere, if it is not there, then no

3) Optimal: An intermediate option that combines these two approaches. They stand for N minutes, then move for Z kilometers, then again stand for X minutes. These variables depend on the time of day, day of the week, month, location (area), knowledge of customer habits, driver’s mood. There are several more individual factors influencing the decision.

It is undoubtedly too early to panic, this is only the beginning of quarantine, and in the future the situation may change dramatically, but in any case, the fuel delivery market will stabilize for a long time.

This is not a question of one or even a couple of months. It is also likely that at the end of the quarantine, many of the usual fuel delivery services will simply disappear, due to the dynamics of decline that is now being observed.
