5 rules for installing security cameras at work

Every video surveillance system must comply with the law, but this is especially important at work, where the installation of security cameras is governed by special regulations. It is undoubtedly the most effective solution to control bad practices within your company, but its installing security cameras must be done correctly. Below we explain the 5 rules that your security camera installation must comply with in the workplace.

  1. Legitimating of the employer
  • The Workers’ Statute authorizes the employer to adopt measures to verify compliance by the employee with their labor obligations and duties, provided that they do not violate human dignity and take into account the condition of disabled workers.
  • The video surveillance system for business control will only be adopted when the purpose and treatment of the images is proportional and there is no other more suitable measure.
  • The right to privacy and to the image of the workers must also be fulfilled.
  1. Image registration
  • Whenever images of people are to be recorded, the file must be registered in the General Data Protection Registry of the National Data Protection Authority in India.

  • If the cameras are also used for security, the registration of the file must include the dual purpose: labor and security control.
  1. Information to the employee and visitors
  • An approved poster (or posters) will be placed in a visible place that informs that it is a video-monitored area. This poster must clearly state the person in charge of the installation and to whom and where they should go to exercise their rights in terms of data protection.
  • Employees and their union representation must also be informed directly, through a means that guarantees the receipt of such information. It should never be done to personal addresses or private mobiles.
  • The remaining information required by data protection legislation will be provided to those affected.
  1. Installing the cameras
  • The cameras will be placed only in the essential spaces for labor control. They will never be put in locker rooms, bathrooms, and break spaces.

  • Only authorized personnel will be able to access the images.
  • If access is made through the Internet, it will be done with user authentication and password of the authorized persons (or any other means that guarantees their unique identification).
  • The images will be kept for up to 30 days after being captured.
