The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine offers accredited programs in osteopathic medicine to students for over sixty years. Its mission is to prepare students to enter the world of Osteopathy as professional certified osteopaths. It is the only fully accredited osteopathic medical school located in the entire United States. It offers programs in both general and specialty Osteopathy as well as other health professions.

The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine offers students many opportunities to complete their formal graduate medical education. Students can choose from over two hundred graduate courses focusing on over one hundred and fifty different clinical practice areas. Students can select methods that apply to both first-year and continuing education. In addition to having full first-year clinical experience, students can achieve credits for their first-year clerkship in an Osteopathic Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Practice from the school. The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to providing its students with the knowledge and tools needed to become professional licensed osteopaths. All of the undergraduate level programs to the graduate level are designed to prepare students for a career as a medical office provider in Osteopathy.

University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine:

The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine was established to provide an academic program that would prepare students to enter the medical field in all areas of Osteopathy. The school offers a variety of graduate degree programs in all levels of Osteopathy. Students have the opportunity to specialize in either General or Specialist Osteopathy. Many graduates have chosen to become board certified osteopaths in several areas of medical practice.

Admission to the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine has been made available through the Association of American Schools of Ophthalmology. To apply for entry into this program, prospective students must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a 3.0 GPA at all times.
  • Have completed all prerequisites.
  • Have a working knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • I have completed the college preparation coursework, which includes basic sciences and mathematics.

Upon completing the college preparation coursework, students will be accepted into the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. Students will be required to complete assigned course work, including lectures and clinical training. Several specific courses are needed throughout the graduated program to fully prepare students for the medical practice they wish to enter upon.

One of the many specializations that the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine has been the study of both general and specific medicine. Students who choose to specialize in Osteopathy will complete both the science portion as well as the application of that particular specialization. Students can choose to concentrate on an area of studies such as endodontics, anorexia, cancer, and cardiac health, to name a few. The programs are especially helpful for those who wish to become practicing physicians and for those who are interested in working in academic settings such as educational facilities, research facilities, or hospitals. International students who are interested in the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine can also complete an online degree.

Admission requirements for the students:

Students who are interested in entering into the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine must complete credits in their first two years of college at the University of the Incarnate Word. During this time, students will complete credits towards their four-year degree through the University of the Incarnate Word Schools of Osteopathic Medicine. At the end of their first year in the program, students will be able to take the “oath of passage,” which is a comprehensive first course in the University of the Incarnate Word Schools of Osteopathy. This first-class course will encompass the core requirements necessary to become an osteopath.

Career in Osteopathy:

Students who wish to pursue a career in Osteopathy should apply for admission to the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. Students should complete the Application for College Access to Knowledge (ACAK) form. After submitting the application, applicants will be reviewed by the University’s committee on campus and given a status examination. The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine has specific course requirements for its students; therefore, they must follow these course requirements to ensure admittance. Students should complete their degree requirements as quickly as possible because the University is expecting a heavy enrollment for Fall 2021.
