Outlook Disconnected from Server? Here’s How to Reconnect

Outlooks brought emailing to the forefront. It is the main application on which thousands rely upon. Not only individuals but also companies. However, this reliance on the application comes with a downside. That is, there are issues when it malfunctions. In this blog, we help you fix the issue when you have Outlook disconnected from the server.

If you work with Outlook while you are in offline mode, you get an indication in the status bar. It is located right at the bottom of your screen. The Outlook icon in the Windows bar has a red X sign which indicates that you are offline. It is beneficial if you are trying to view your mailbox when you are en route somewhere. Also, if you want to view your emails from a place that has poor network connectivity, then Offline access is beneficial. But if you are online, it is easy to connect to the mail server and send or receive emails.

The catch to offline mode is you are unable to send or receive new mails. For this, you need to get back to a healthy network. However, the offline feature is useful if you want to view old emails.

Reasons Why Outlook Disconnected from Server

There can be many reasons behind Outlook shows disconnected. However, we have the most common ones here.

  1. Connectivity issues in your system, or unavailability of the internet.
  2. A hiccup in your network/ VPN connectivity. Or, it can be labeled as incorrect settings.
  3. A downtime of the application. This usually doesn’t last long.

Bypassing the Issue When You See Outlook Disconnected

The issues above are the most common causes. If they resolve, then Outlook will automatically reconnect back to the server when online. However, if this doesn’t work, then follow the steps mentioned below to fix it.

Re-feed the Password

  1. Go to the Send / Receive tab.
  2. After that, hit the Type your Exchange Password button and proceed according to onscreen instructions.
  3. Let Outlook connect and then start to sync your mailbox.
  4. If that doesn’t happen or you are not working on Exchange, close all Outlook Windows.
  5. Now you need to restart Outlook.
  6. After that, ensure Network/Internet connectivity by opening a browser window and opening a website.
  7. Finally, if there are no Internet issues, then restart your computer.

Calling in the Outlook Safe Mode

If both the above methods don’t work, then follow the steps given below to open Outlook in the safe mode:

  1. Close all Outlook Windows.
  2. After that, hit the Search button which you can find next to the Start
  3. Type Run. This will launch the Run functionality.
  4. After that, type Outlook/safe and hit OK.
  5. Outlook will now open in safe mode.
  6. Now, try to connect.
  7. Disable any Outlook add-ins since they might hinder the functioning.
  8. After that, you need to restart Outlook.
  9. Finally, give it a try to access your mailbox.

Reconnecting the Email to Server

Follow these steps before you proceed to the fixes. There may be an issue with the settings, with no error in existence. So try these first.

  1. First, you need to launch Outlook.
  2. After that, you need to navigate to the following File > Info > Account and Social Network Settings > Account settings.
  3. Here you have to opt for your Account.
  4. After that, follow the path Change > More Settings > Connection tab.
  5. Finally, look under Outlook Anywhere. Here you have to make a selection for “Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP”.\

Now you can check whether you are back online. More importantly, you can test this by sending a mail to yourself. If it does not work, then proceed to the next section.

Disconnect from VPN/Proxy

If you are using a VPN or proxy application, chances are that it can give you some trouble. Not because the application is unreliable, but because it can be having troubles that resonate with Outlook.

To bypass it, all you need to do is disable it temporarily. It will help you understand whether this is the cause behind the issue. If the issue is resolved, then you can resume working on Outlook.

To Conclude

You need to be vigilant and check whether your Outlook shows disconnected from the server. You must do that if you are not getting emails for longer than usual. However, if that is the case then please follow the above steps carefully. This will help you bypass the issue.
