Teachers and Employees Continue Protest Four Days After Police Obstruction of March Toward Ministry of Education
Teachers and employees of recognized non-MPO educational institutions have continued their protest even four days after police obstructed their march toward the Ministry of Education, demanding inclusion in the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) system. Participating in an ongoing sit-in program in front of the National Press Club in the capital, they called for an immediate announcement regarding MPO enlistment.
The protesters stated that teachers and employees of recognized educational institutions have been leading a difficult life for many years without salaries and allowances. To put an end to this situation, they have been carrying out a series of protest programs demanding MPO inclusion.
On June 11, while implementing a march toward the Ministry of Education, the protesters were stopped by police as they advanced toward the Secretariat. Several coordinators were detained during the incident but were later released following protests by the demonstrating teachers and employees. Four days have passed since the incident, yet no clear announcement has been made by the government regarding their demands. As a result, movement leaders have indicated that they are preparing to intensify their protest programs.
Leaders of the movement said, “We are peacefully protesting to realize our legitimate demands. If an effective decision regarding MPO inclusion is not made soon, more stringent programs will be announced.”
Teachers and employees from various districts and upazilas across the country participated in the sit-in program. They claimed that despite being an important part of the country’s education system, non-MPO teachers have long been subjected to discrimination. Therefore, they urged the government to bring them under the MPO system without delay.
Teacher leaders also stated that their sit-in program in front of the National Press Club will continue until their demands are met.
