Introducing skilled trades education earlier in schools can have a transformative impact on students, communities, and the workforce—an idea strongly championed by contractor and TV personality Mike Holmes

Check out Episode 1, Season 5 of the Holmes on Homes Podcast where Mike Holmes talks to experts about skilled trades shortage and what we can do to encourage more youths to enter the trades. Champion the Skilled Trades

Holmes has long advocated and championed the skilled trades, emphasizing that these careers are not only essential but also fulfilling, well-paying, and in high demand. By integrating trades education into the curriculum at an earlier age, like elementary school, we can help reshape perceptions and open doors for students who may thrive in hands-on careers.

One of the core aspects of Holmes’s message is about respect and value for trades. He believes that for too long, skilled trades have been viewed as a “fallback” career option rather than a first choice. I grew up being exposed to sheet-metal, welding and shop classes in school, says Mike Holmes – not so much anymore.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Introducing students to trades early—through workshops, shop classes, and cooperative education programs—can end the stigma and present trades as legitimate, professional, and rewarding career paths. I think parents also need to appreciate the value of a career in the skilled trades – they are just as important as more traditional careers, like doctor or lawyer. This approach can help students discover talents and interests that might otherwise go unnoticed in a traditional academic setting.

Early exposure also addresses the growing skilled labor shortage. Across many industries—electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and carpenters —there’s a widening gap as older workers retire and fewer young people enter these fields. Holmes often warns that we’re facing a serious skills crisis, and getting students interested sooner is a key solution. By fostering interest and providing training opportunities in high school or better in elementary school, we create a pipeline of capable, motivated young workers ready to meet industry demands.

Organizations like  Skills Canada and Skills USA both actively promote skilled trades and technology careers among youth, through community outreach programs, competitions, hands-on activities and collaborations with employers, educators and government.

Furthermore, trades education promotes practical life skills that benefit all students, even those who don’t pursue trades professionally. Understanding basic electrical work, plumbing, or carpentry can lead to smarter homeowners and safer renovations—values Holmes has always emphasized through his mantra: “Make It Right.”

Not every student needs to follow the same path, and by valuing skilled trades equally alongside university tracks, we empower young people to find purpose, financial stability, and pride in their work. Introducing trades earlier isn’t just about jobs—it’s about opportunity, respect, and building a better future.
