Most of the time, we think big when it comes to home cleaning, or maintainance. They get fixed everytime, and you have no problems with that. Seeing the regular spots at home clean and tidy can be very therapeutic. However, while you were busy finishing all the bigger home projects, you tend to set aside the smaller ones. And just because they are small, does not mean they are not as important as the big ones. If left unchecked, these can result in bigger problems, and calling help from professionals will be the only way for you to fix or repair them. What better way to deal with them than doing the fixing them before the problem gets uncontrollable?
Here are seven things you should not neglect maintaining at home before it’s too late:
1 Get your kitchen sink caulked. Your sink is one of the most daily abused part of the house. Not only is it exposed to water which can damage the caulking, the chemicals and cleansers can also contribute to its wear and tear.
Use your utility knife to remove all the traces of the old caulk. Then, remove any loose grout before you rinse and dry the area. Afterwhich, you should be ready to reapply the caulk.
2 Check those crawl spaces. Your crawl space is basically the area under your floors for elevated homes, or any unnoticed spaces you do not normally go to – your storage room, your attic or ventilation ducts.
Be sure that you keep it away from moisture to avoid mold growth, termites and common water related damages. This also helps the air quality of your home.
3 Lubricate those door springs and hinges. Your goal is to avoid replacing it sooner than needed. Make sure that you regularly lubricate those rollers, hinges and tracks, especially for heavy doors which take the heavier load like that in your garage. Motor oils, or heavy-duty lubricants like silicon oil can do the trick.
4 Repair the small cracks. These cracks eventually turn into bigger ones if left unchecked. Large cracks, especially those found near the foundations of your home could cost you more if you do not fix them right away. You can do this by applying concrete sealer on those small cracks.
Concrete sealers are available in any home improvement store.
5 Have those exhaust fans, and other ventilation blades cleaned. Exhaust fans can accumulate dirt the longer they are getting used. You need to regularly turn on the exhaust fans every time you are using your bathroom to remove odor and keep it from mold growth. Your ventilation fans for your attics or storage rooms should also be regularly operating. This is to keep moisture from these areas and allow the cooler air to circulate. This helps avoid wear and tear and other heat-related damage to your roofing or the room itself. If left unattended, you might need to call for mold remediation to have it cleaned.
These fans should be cleaned every two to three months to ensure they can last longer and function properly. Hose them with water if possible, or simply wipe the dust off of their fan blades.
