What Are Neodymium Magnets?

Similarly, neodymium magnets exist in the shapes of rings, rods, and spheres depending on their application.

In addition to different shapes, neodymium magnets exist in multiple grades including N35, N42, N45, N48, N50, N52, and N55. N45 is the most common grade produced, whereas N55 is the grade with the highest quality. 

How Are Neodymium Magnets Made?

Neodymium magnets can essentially be made through two means that are either bonding or sintering, and each is discussed briefly below:

  1. Bonding

Bonding refers to the process of when magnets are created after mixing raw, using epoxy to bond them, and then pressing all of it into a cavity and heating. Once the magnets are heat-cured, they are run through a coating for corrosion protection.

  1. Sintering

Sintering refers to the process of turning raw material into blocks using high pressure, which is followed by a complicated heating process. During the heating process, the block is cut into dictated shapes and coated for fortification against corrosion.

While both bonding and sintering are great ways to create neodymium magnets, sintering is preferred over bonding as the former creates comparatively stronger magnets. However, magnets made through bonding are cheaper and more versatile

Neodymium magnets consist of a variety of elements, including neodymium in a huge quantity. Some of the other common ingredients used include iron, boron, niobium, aluminum, cobalt, and dysprosium.

Some of the most common yet unseen use of neodymium magnets exists in cabinets, furniture, clothing, and accessories for clasps. It also finds its use in medicine with its application in MRI machines and dentures. They are also used in mobile phones, hard drives, and sound equipment. It is also used in magnet therapy which is used to treat chronic pain.
