Qualifying for a GSA Schedule contract can offer fantastic opportunities for your business, including long-term business relationships with government clients, higher sales year upon year, and access to exclusive advertising tools. We’ll explain what you need to know about the GSA qualifications for winning a government contract.

Does your firm qualify for a GSA Contract?

The GSA certification process is complex and time-consuming, so it’s important to make sure that you’re a suitable candidate. GSA-eligible must fulfill the following criteria:

  1. Registration

Companies that want to work with GSA must have a UEI number identifying their business, NAICS codes categorizing their primary business activities, and registration with the System for Award Management (SAM).

  1. Two years in business

The federal government wants to work with reliable firms, so GSA requires that businesses have operated for at least two years (with the exception of IT Schedule contractors under the Start-Up Springboard Program).

  1. Past sales

GSA will consider whether you can fulfill the requirements for the products and services in your Schedule. You’ll need to demonstrate past sales in the commercial marketplace, alongside product/service proposals, price sheets, and paid invoices.

  1. $100,000 revenue

GSA contractors must meet minimum sales targets to maintain their contract, and GSA needs to know that you’re capable of doing so. Prospective contractors must show at least $100,000 in sales over the previous two years.

  1. Financial solvency

Aside from sales, you must show evidence that you’re not in debt, have not taken out excessive loans, and that your assets are accessible. Government customers receive favorable GSA discounts so you should factor this into your business plan.

  1. TAA compliance

The Trade Agreements Act (TAA) states that the U.S. Government can only procure products that are predominantly manufactured in the U.S. or certain designated countries. If your products are TAA compliant, then you could be GSA eligible.

  1. Great client references

A key part of the GSA Schedule contracts application package is the Past Performance Evaluation, compiled by Open Ratings with the help of your previous clients. You should have at least five positive references and your clients should be willing to complete a questionnaire testifying to your reliability.
