What Are the Benefits of Personal Training and How Do You Pick the Right One?

Visit ten commercial gyms or fitness centers and ask why you should use a personal trainer and you will get ten different answers based on why you should use a personal trainer from their facility. The problem with the advice you get from these professional salespeople is that the advice is driven by sales goals and designed to help the local personal trainer business.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am a personal trainer, I work at a large commercial gym and I also want to build a business. Getting access to gym members sold on the merits and value of personal training certainly makes this a whole lot easier. But I prefer my clients decide to use a personal trainer (preferably me) for sound reasons and with a realistic view of what they can get for their hard-earned dollar.

Let’s start at the beginning

Let’s start at the beginning; Why is it best to train with a personal trainer? In short, there are ten reasons why most people choose a personal trainer and they are:

1. You see no results. Many people start an exercise regime with an overall goal in mind, usually weight loss, and will work like crazy for weeks, months and even years without seeing any noticeable results. A good personal trainer will start your journey with a comprehensive pre-workout screening questionnaire and have an in-depth conversation with you about your goals, motivation and previous exercise history. Only then, after they understand where you are now and where you want to be, will they start drawing up a training and nutrition plan especially developed for you. The pre-workout screening includes a body weight assessment, circumference measurements, and possibly even skinfold measurements to create a baseline against which to measure your future progress.

2. You don’t know where to start. No personal trainer worth spending money on assumes you have any prior knowledge of anatomy and physiology, nutrition, or exercise science. The reason is that by treating each client as a blank canvas and developing exercises based on sound technique and progression principles, each client has the opportunity to learn the safest, most effective way to build strength, cardiovascular. Most people who join a gym don’t know how to train effectively or safely, and there’s no one better to teach you how to do that than your personal trainer. A large number of people will download a pattern exercise from their favorite website or get advice from their “fit” friends. I know from personal experience that if you don’t change your workouts regularly, or add some interesting cross-training options, you’ll get very bored with the workout and unlikely to even try. Bang, there goes your motivation. A good personal trainer will constantly assess your progress, how your body is adapting to exercise, and assess your motivation. If any or all of these indicators show signs of plateauing or you are less motivated, he will change your routine and expand your training to make it interesting and constantly challenge your body.

4. You need a challenge. If you’re like the majority of the working population, there will be days when you just don’t feel like pushing yourself to the limit or just want to relax. A personal trainer won’t let you make BS excuses for not exercising. It pushes you to complete those last two reps and encourages you throughout the set if the weight feels too heavy. She will be your conscience, your guide and your cheerleader, but she will not be your mother.

5. You want to learn to exercise yourself. Even if you want to exercise alone, it’s a good idea to hire a personal trainer for a few sessions to learn the right way to exercise. This is especially true if you want to learn more about the muscles in your body, how to target those muscles, and how to complete exercises with good technique. Just a few sessions can teach you about your body, how it works and what you can do to get the best results from your workout.

6. You need accountability and motivation. Personal trainers have built-in motivation. You’re investing both money and time in your health and fitness, and there’s nothing like a regular appointment to get you out of your ass and moving. A good personal trainer also ensures responsibility.
