As the seasons change and the weather becomes colder, the days darker, and the holidays closer, it is time to make your home more inviting and cozy for the winter months. There are a variety of ways to achieve this cozy atmosphere in your home.

Here are three important things to consider while doing so.

Design Elements

One of the best ways to immediately change the feel of your home is with strategic design elements. With darker days outside, it is nice to have some light tones in your home to help brighten your space.

The winter days can make your home feel dark, but a nice warm white paint color can quickly brighten the space. A warm white color tends to have more neutral or yellow undertones, and can also trick the eye to make your space appear bigger.

Another way to warm up your space is through the use of natural textures. This can be achieved with jute rugs, lambskin throws, wicker or wood elements, and cozy flannels. These textures add visual appeal to your home and make it appear more livable and inviting.

Also, by adding well-placed lamps, you can create additional light, which also casts a more intimate glow.

Space heater

During the winter months as the cold creeps in, it is nice to provide some extra heat. Not everyone has the space, proper venting, or budget for a nice fireplace, but a space heater can do the trick.

Not only have you created a warm environment with color, light, and texture, but you have literally created a warmer space with heat. By placing the heater in a large room, where the heat may not circulate as well, your home will be filled with more warmth.

The space heater is not the focal point of your room and takes up limited space, which allows you to create other focal points. This can be fun as you add decor for the holidays that help create excitement in your home.

Scents and Aromas

Scents and aromas are some of the best ways to instantly add warmth to your space. So many of our memories are connected to smell, especially around the holiday season. When scented candles are added to the space, not only do you get the added benefit of a beautiful smell, but you also benefit from the mood that is created with the flickering wick of a candle.

If candles aren’t for you, there are wall plug-ins and even oil diffusers that can help create the right atmosphere in your home.

This scent-filled atmosphere can take you down memory lane, especially if you utilize winter scents that are associated with the holidays. Some of these scents include a nice pumpkin or cinnamon spice, which connote memories of family time during Thanksgiving, and the traditions that were created in your childhood home that you are continuing on in your life.

Additional scents that help you reminisce about cheerful memories are spruce and evergreen scents, peppermint, and beautiful orange and berry citrus smells.

The Trifecta

When you utilize all of your senses in creating an ideal cozy winter space, you truly achieve an inviting winter home. By using decor to create interest, having different textures, and then topping it off with sentimental aromas, all that’s left to tantalize the senses is a wonderful meal to bring everyone together.

With sight, smell, and touch, you have achieved the ultimate trifecta of a cozy and inviting winter home.
