Teachers protesting for the nationalization of independent Ebtedayee Madrasas faced police obstruction while attempting to submit a memorandum to the Education Minister. According to the Bangladesh Swatantra Ebtedayee Madrasa National Teachers’ Unity Front, at least two teachers were injured during the incident.
On Sunday (June 15) at around 11:00 AM, teachers wearing burial shrouds (kafan) as a symbol of protest marched to seek an audience with the Education Minister and submit a memorandum. However, police reportedly blocked their procession, preventing them from delivering the memorandum.
Leaders of the organization stated that they have been demanding the nationalization of all independent Ebtedayee Madrasas registered under the Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board, similar to government primary schools. As part of their ongoing movement, teachers have been conducting a continuous sit-in program in the capital and observing a hunger strike unto death while wearing burial shrouds.
According to the protesters, although their movement has remained peaceful, police intervened when they attempted to deliver the memorandum. During the ensuing scuffle, two members of the organization were reportedly injured. The injured individuals received primary medical treatment.
The Secretary General of the Bangladesh Swatantra Ebtedayee Madrasa National Teachers’ Unity Front, Hazrat Mawlana Hossain Khan Helen, said:
“Teachers of independent Ebtedayee Madrasas have been deprived of salaries, benefits, and job security for many years. Our sole demand is the nationalization of all registered independent Ebtedayee Madrasas. The movement will continue until our demand is met.”
The organization has called upon the government to immediately announce the nationalization of independent Ebtedayee Madrasas and take effective measures to resolve the long-standing problems faced by their teachers.
