Potomac, MD, offers the best of both worlds in so many ways. Most notable is its location, being situated in peace and tranquility amongst breathtaking natural beauty while concurrently located within an easy drive of the busy metropolis of Washington and its numerous suburbs.
For that reason and others, Potomac has become highly sought-after over the years, being home to CEOs, actors, singers, athletes, astronauts and politicians and becoming amongst the nation’s most affluent communities. As a result, Potomac possesses elegant and stylish neighborhoods, most of which showcase beautiful plots of land that feature massive houses. There are a ton of real estate agents and companies there that can help when trying to find a home there.
The Beginnings of Potomac
Throughout the 1700s, what is now known as Potomac was a sparsely populated farming community that was called “Offutts Crossroads.” In fact, well into the 1800s, its population was only 100. This is also the time period when its name was changed to its current moniker.
Potomac started growing in population in the early 1900s, and that growth accelerated considerably in the 1950s and continued doing so before slowing around 1990.
Top Neighborhoods
All of Potomac’s neighborhoods have so much to offer their residents and visitors. That said, a few do stand out.
River Falls is perfect for those who like to be close to water as the Potomac River is nearby. The neighborhood is also home to especially upscale houses.
Conversely, Potomac Village is a perfect option for people who want to have easy access to much of the elegant dining and the stylish shops that this community is known for.
Golfers especially enjoy living in Avenel as TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm is here. That said, even non-golfers love Avenel for its gorgeous scenery and top amenities.
Also of note is that many of Potomac’s neighborhoods have their own swim and tennis clubs and are tight-nit communities in and of themselves.
Natural Attractions
The beautiful natural attractions that are in and near Potomac are numerous. A few examples of these include Cabin John Regional Park, Scott’s Run Nature Preserve, Billy Goat Trail and Great Falls Park.
The latter attraction features cascading falls that drop water up to 50 feet, and you can even head out on a path to an island in the corresponding river and take in the incredible scene from that vantage point.
Other Attractions
Art enthusiasts regularly walk through the Glenstone art museum to view its stunning artwork and on its grounds to take in its beautiful sculpture garden.
Also of note, Clara Barton, who founded the Red Cross, lived in the area for 15 years, and the nearby fascinating Clara Barton National Historic Site opened after her death.
Schools
This family-oriented community is home to some of the nation’s best public schools, all of which are a part of Montgomery County Public Schools, while its numerous private schools are highly revered as well.
In fact, Winston Churchill High School, Potomac’s only public high school, was the inspiration for the television series, “Beverly Hills, 90210.”
