How to achieve Pride-perfect rainbow hair

Pride and rainbow hair go hand-in-hand. But deciding to opt for a rainbow style is only the start of the process. How subtle or bold do you want your rainbow hair to be? How long do you want the colour to last? Decisions like these will influence the style you choose.

There is also the question of which style will best suit your personality. According to a recent survey by All Things Hair,  71% of people report that that hairstyle plays a big role in the expression of their identity. So, what do you want your rainbow hair to say about you and your personality this Pride month?

Rainbow roots

One big Pride trend that we’ve seen in the last couple of years is rainbow roots. This is where the rainbow colors are applied only to the roots of the hair, often working outward from a parting.

Rainbow roots is a flexible style, in that you can opt for a small, subtle rainbow flag just around your parting or something that extends further down the hair for a more striking look.

Either way, this can be a bold but simple style to achieve. You can either head to the salon to get your rainbow roots done or create the look yourself using hair chalks or colored wax or gel. Just be sure to have a couple of practices in advance so that you’re confident in creating your rainbow roots on the day of your local Pride event.

Rainbow braids

If you wear braids as your protective style, rainbow braids could be the perfect way to add some glamour to your hair this Pride month. You can dye individual braids different colors, opting for a couple of colors from the rainbow or the whole spectrum. This style can be as subtle or as bold as you like, depending on the number of braids you dye.

Hidden rainbow

If you want your hair to look fabulous for Pride but need something less colorful for work, a hidden rainbow style could be the perfect compromise. Hidden rainbow hair is where you color a layer of the hair that sits beneath another layer. The hair on top effectively hides the rainbow but when you tie the hair on top up, the rainbow can shine forth in all its glory. A perfect style if you have to look more conservative for work all day but plan to attend a Pride event straight afterwards.

Creating a stunning hidden rainbow style isn’t always easy. As such, unless you are particularly well practiced at dyeing your own hair and creating tricky styles, it might be best to put yourself in the hands of a professional for this one.

Full sparkle rainbow

As well as rainbow hair, hair that sparkles and shimmers has been a big trend at Pride events over the last few years. If you really want to achieve something special this year, why not combine rainbow braids or full color rainbow hair with some added sparkle? Glitter gels and shimmer sprays are available in a variety of colors, all of which can add extra glamour to your Pride rainbow hair. This is another look that it’s well worth practicing in advance so that there are no sparkle-related disasters on the day!
