Teaching a child about God is one of the most rewarding journeys a parent or guardian can take. You help them discover a lifelong friendship with a Creator who loves them deeply.

Here are five simple ways to instill the love of God in your children:

1. Model a Life of Prayer

Children learn more from what they see than what they hear. Let them see you talking to God naturally throughout the day. It doesn’t have to be a formal prayer at a wooden altar. You can say, “Thank you, God, for this beautiful sunset,” or “Lord, please help me have a patient heart today.” When they see that God is your friend, they will want Him to be theirs, too.

2. Explore God’s Handwriting in Nature

Nature is like a giant, colorful storybook written by God. Take a walk and point out the intricate patterns on a leaf or the vastness of the sky. Explain that the same God who made the stars and the mountains made them, too. This helps children understand that God is both powerful and creative.

3. Weave Faith into Daily Conversations

You don’t need a “religion hour” to teach faith. Bring God into the small moments. If your child is nervous about a school project, remind them that God is their helper. If they are celebrating a win, remind them that God gives us our talents. Making faith a part of regular conversation shows them that God is involved in every detail of their lives.

4. Read Faith-Based Children’s Books

Stories are the language of childhood. Reading faith-based books together is a powerful way to make spiritual concepts easy to understand. These stories provide a safe space for children to ask questions and visualize God’s love. By choosing books that focus on God’s character, you provide them with a foundation of trust and peace that stays with them long after the book is closed.

5. Practice Gratitude Together

At the end of each day, ask your child, “What is one good thing God gave us today?” This simple habit trains their eyes to look for God’s goodness. It shifts their focus from what they want to what they have been blessed with, fostering a heart of contentment and love for the Giver.

Finding Peace in the Stillness

As we teach our children to navigate a busy world, one of the greatest gifts we can give them is the ability to be quiet before God. A wonderful resource for this is the book “Be Still” by Jennifer Pfeiffer.

Focused on the beautiful promise of Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God,” this book is designed to bless young readers with the truth that we can trust Him completely. It teaches children and reminds families that God is in every detail of our lives and that in stillness, we truly see the beauty all around us. It is in our stillness that His light often shines most bright.
