With the upcoming patch, there are some significant changes that might affect how you approach your raiding and expedition-building. Greatsword is still the highest DPS weapon, but hatchet has taken a hit with some of the nerfs. Raging Torrent got nerfed in terms of damage and Fortification got changed to heavy attacks versus light attacks. This means that when you go on an expedition, you will be dealing less damage.
The Fire Staff is the only build that got buffed and is the best weapon for PVE DPS. The skills you will want to run are Flamethrower, Meteor Shower, and Pillar. Flamethrower is going to be your best ability by far because it will allow you to stack five stacks of Smolder on every target. Meteor Shower has 100 weapon damage on the first hit and then 50 weapon damage on the remaining ones, and Pillar of Fire deals 165 weapon damage at its base.
The Fire Staff is all about AoE damage, so the main abilities you will be using are the Flamethrower, the Oblivion, and the Essence Rupture. All of these abilities will give you high burst damage and AoE damage. You also want to use the Pillar of Fire for more AoE damage, and the Meteor Shower for single-target damage. Lastly, you want to make sure to include the Empowered Meteor Shower in your build to maximize your damage output.
For your secondary weapon, the Void Gauntlet is your best bet. Oblivion Scream is the most standard ability, but Rupture is a great replacement for Orbit Decay. Rupture inflicts Rend and allies within four meters of the afflicted target heal for 80 of your weapon damage when Essence Rupture ends. You can also animate and cancel it to negate a lot of the damage loss that you’d have over Orbit Decay.
