Scottburgh, South Africa –

Confirmed by Reptile Curator Wade Kilian on X: Crocworld Conservation Centre curator Announces the Passing of Henry. It is with heavy hearts that Crocworld Conservation Centre worker confirms the passing of Henry, the world’s oldest known Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) in captivity.

The news was first shared today by Reptile Curator Wade Kilian via a post on X (formerly Twitter), followed by this official statement. Henry died today, April 30, 2026, at the estimated age of approximately 125 years.  Henry, a massive Nile crocodile believed to have been born around 1900 in the Okavango Delta region of Botswana, was captured in the early 20th century. He arrived at Crocworld Conservation Centre in 1985 at an already advanced estimated age of 85. Measuring over 5 meters (approximately 16–17 feet) long and weighing around 700 kilograms (more than 1,500 pounds), Henry was a true giant of his species and a beloved resident for decades.

During his long life at the centre, Henry became one of the most prolific breeders in captivity, fathering an estimated more than 10,000 offspring with at least six female partners. He maintained a polygamous “harem” and played a vital role in the centre’s conservation and breeding programs. Despite his advanced age — having lost some teeth and toes over the decades — Henry remained active until recently, swimming, basking in the sun, and participating in educational feeding demonstrations for visitors. Staff described him as happy, healthy, and energetic for the vast majority of his time at Crocworld.  Henry’s remarkable longevity made him a living ambassador for crocodile conservation and education. He outlived two world wars, numerous U.S. presidents, and countless global events while inspiring awe in thousands of visitors and researchers. The centre celebrated his 125th birthday in December 2025 with public events, cupcakes for guests, and a special feast.

Crocworld has a history of addressing false rumors about Henry’s death, including unconfirmed reports in September 2023 that were quickly debunked with statements from Wade Kilian. Today’s announcement marks the first official confirmation of his passing.  Wade Kilian, Reptile Curator at Crocworld, said: “Henry lived an extraordinary life and brought joy and education to so many. He was still living his best life until the end. We are grateful for the decades he shared with us and the legacy he leaves through his many offspring.”
