A beginner’s guide to wireless networking

Date:

Wireless networking has become one of the most popular technologies in today’s world. Most advanced devices such as smartphones, desktops, laptops, etc. come embedded with WiFi ability that you can utilize to connect to home or public networks. To do so, you have to set up a range extender like Netgear ex6100 extender Setup which provides you fast Internet speed. Are you fully unaware of the term wireless networking? Or maybe you have stepped in the universe of this technology first time. This tutorial will present a brief history of WiFi networks, its advantages, bands, modulation techniques, etc. Continue reading.

History and types of WiFi

In the 90s decade, a great technology dubbed WaveLAN was invented. It is specially meant for wireless cash registers. The primary form of this technology supported only 2Mbps connections. It is officially known as WiFi just a few years ago when its popularity increased. Since then, industry experts have been continued to develop new standards and some of new versions are 802.11b, 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11ac, and much more. Every standard can communicate with each other. However, latest versions provide improved functions and performance.

Connection modes

It provides support for three connection modes:

  1. Infrastructure mode

This is the most common mode and specially used in home, public as well as business networks. Wireless access point (WAP) is mainly required by this mode. And if you are using home network, then the main access point is generally offered by your router. It creates a set of connections and all clients or nodes connect to it.

The network is recognized by service set identifier or SSID. These are allocated by an admin via mywifiext web user interface.

Then APs transmit this SSID, letting clients connect to the right network. On the basis of your configuration method, a WAP is able to transmit multiple SSIDs.

  • Ad-hoc mode

Typical infrastructure mode depends on an AP via which all nodes on network can communicate. Moreover, a node is able to connect to only one AP at a time. By using this mode, nodes can communicate with each other without any need for access point.

  • Direct mode

This mode enables you to connect two wireless devices along with an AP. Initially, it works in the same way as that of Bluetooth but it is much faster and meant for same kind of applications.

Common WiFi equipments

  1. WiFi range extender or repeater

It is one of the best devices which is used to boost the existing wireless range and coverage. All you need to do is merely place it within the range of your home or office router and configure it through mywifiext.net website. Then, it receives signals from network and retransmits it.

  • Wireless access point (WAP)

This equipment creates and provides a boost to your current network. After that, it connects Ethernet devices to it. These tools are hardly used as most small networks make use of router given by their Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  • Wireless router

At the very first glance, it looks similar to WAP but contains a DSL connection to Internet along with WAP and Ethernet ports.

Benefits of wireless networking

This type of networking requires no cables to run, thus free users from the mess of wires. It is faster and more pocket-friendly for users. Apart from this, it is very easy to set up, no professional skills are required.

New devices can make a connection with it in a straightforward manner as they don’t have to find a physical AP.

On the other hand, it may be tricky to achieve high-speed Internet without using boosters in larger buildings.

So, this was all you need to know to become well-versed in this field. If you still have any queries, feel free to drop them via comments section below.
