2022 Most Popular Cats in the United States

Date:

Cats are one of nature’s greatest treasures; pride, friendliness, playfulness, dominance, beauty (or cuteness, if you prefer), and randomness in one fluffy package.

If you’re looking to buy or adopt a cat, you want a species with the best blend of these traits. Guess what? Other people want them too. That’s what makes them so popular in the United States.

Unsurprisingly, the perfect personality blend is not exclusive to any single species of cats, and your mileage may vary. There are lots of cat species out there with very desirable traits and more coming into the world every decade.

In this article, we’ll bring them to your awareness.

Sphynx Cats

They may be hairless, but that does nothing to kill the cuteness factor. Hairlessness is a natural genetic trait achieved through selective breeding. Because of their hairlessness, sphynx cat lose body heat at a faster rate compared to coated cats. For this reason, they tend to seek out warm places to spend their time. Care to guess what this means? It means you get a cuddle buddy at home when you get a sphynx.

But being hairless isn’t the only thing they are known for. Their extroverted nature is the stuff of legends. They are also known to display surprising intelligence and affection toward humans (it’s always heart-warming to see one running to greet you at the door; exactly what you need to make you smile after a long day at work).

Elf Cat (also known as Elf Sphynx)

With that name, it probably isn’t that shocking to see another hairless cat, is it? That’s because they share the same hairless gene as the Sphynx (same reason for the name), but also have some American Curl in their blood. This is evident in the curly ears (does anyone else find those ears incredibly cute?). You’ll probably never find a more playful breed of cat.

Elf cats have a friendly, gentle personality and can fit into most household settings. They’re known to demand attention from their owners, in addition to being intelligent and playful. If you’ve got a lot of free time, Elf cats are best suited for you.

Bambino Cats

This delightful cat breed is a cross between the Sphynx and the Munchkin. The cat has adorably short legs (evidence of the Munchkin short-limb gene running at full power) which do absolutely nothing to curb its displays of exuberance and playfulness which are quite frequent. As you might expect, this breed of cat is hairless, making them lose heat faster than their coated munchkin cousins.

Generally, though, this breed, while playful, is mostly laid-back and seems to enjoy the company. Owners should not be surprised to find this cuteness following them around the house.

Dwelf Cats

This breed is the culmination of all the fine features exhibited by the Sphynx, Elf, and Bambino. Hairless (that’s a rather fetching sweater around it, don’t you think?), short-legged, and curly-eared, this breed is rather new, so new that some cat registries haven’t even accepted it yet.

If you want a pet that is both cute and intelligent, then you cannot go wrong with a Dwelf. There is nothing cuter, friendlier, or more intelligent than these adorable creatures. In addition to being playful, social, and lovable, they are also a lot of fun to spend time with, especially in group settings. Their high-level intelligence should be taken note of and nurtured. There are toys for that.

Lykoi, The Wolf Cat

As with the others on this list, the lykoi, or wolf cat (that’s a more wicked name) is a mostly hairless ball of sunshine. Unlike the others on this list, wolf cats are not descended from the Sphynx, artificially or otherwise. Rather, that sparse coat? All natural; a mutation of the short-haired cat genes.

However, one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover because, despite their feral appearance and cool name, the Lykoi possess a puppy-like innocence, and are often viewed as having a special love and affection for humans. Regardless of the environment they are in, they also display a keen sense of curiosity.

Conclusion

These cats are all relatively new finds and breeds with all the health problems that follow hairless breeds. As a result, if you wish to get one as an addition to your family (excellent choice, by the way), it’s best to get one that’s been vaccinated. Might as well get them from the Purrxotics Cattery (litter-trained is another bonus). Read over our site before when you are looking for a sphynx cat for sale.
