Zian Flemming Fires Millwall Past Stoke 1-0

Zian Flemming scored his record-breaking first goal as a Millwall player as The Den cruised past Stoke to stay atop of the Championship. The Dutchman scored after nine minutes to give Millwall an edge in their play-off push.

Gary Rowett’s team are 17th, four points behind third-placed Middlesbrough with one game left to play. They remain five points ahead of relegation rivals Wigan who suffered a 2-1 defeat to Blackpool.

Zian Flemming’s first goal in a Millwall shirt

Zian Flemming’s stunning weak foot strike was the only goal in Millwall’s hard-fought 1-0 win against struggling Stoke. This means they have now won their first league double over Stoke in two decades and remain on course for promotion to the Championship play-offs with nine points clear of relegation zone with one game left to play.

Flemming, who had been linked with a move to the Premier League, has made an impact at The Den and has already established himself as an integral member of Gary Rowett’s side. It appears he has settled in well and already plays an integral role in Rowett’s attack – showing he has the potential to be one of Millwall’s top players in the future.

After a lengthy stint in the Dutch Eredivisie, Flemming signed for Millwall in June for an undisclosed fee and showed why he is such an exciting player: His pace and quality in the air make him a real threat and should see him score goals at a high rate throughout this season – particularly at home.

Ben Wilmot’s goalkeeping heroics

Ben Wilmot has made the most of his opportunity in the first team this season and has certainly left an impression on fans. His lightning quick reflexes are key for the Eagles, and they hope this marks a new era at Selhurst Park.

He has achieved incredible success since joining Newcastle United and looks set to progress into a first choice keeper this season. His penalty saves against Derby have cemented him as a fan favourite; at just 21 years of age, there could be even greater things in store for him in the future.

Gary Rowett’s side remain top of the table

Millwall continued their impressive start to the season under new manager Gary Rowett with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against struggling Stoke City at The Den. Zian Flemming’s 11th goal of the season (his joint fourth with Boro’s Chuba Akpom) helped the Lions maintain their top-six spot, nine points clear of relegation danger.

Millwall achieved their first league double over Stoke in two decades with the win. Danny Wesseling capitalized on a Ben Pearson miscue at the halfway line to rocket past Matija Sarkic with ease within nine minutes of play.

Despite their win, Leicester remain one point off the play-off places in the Championship. A loss at Rotherham would drop them off the ladder but with two games left to play they can still make up ground on top six teams if Bristol City suffer another home defeat.

Last season, Millwall were in the bottom half of the table; now they find themselves comfortably within reach of promotion and in the play-off zone. We spoke to this week’s Town End guest writer Alex Grace about Millwall’s progress under Rowett so far and whether South Londoners will be back in Premier League competition by year’s end.

Stoke’s poor form

Stoke have lost six consecutive matches across all competitions and are one point above relegation. Their performance against West Ham last weekend only added fuel to their supporters’ frustrations, and a loss to West Brom on Saturday could further compound those feelings.

Under Chris Wilder, the Potters had struggled for creativity in the final third. This was particularly evident when Millwall’s aerially dominant central defence had possession of the ball inside their own half.

They often put pressure on the opposition defence to maintain possession, but their speed was too slow for a side lacking attacking options. Furthermore, they had difficulty transitioning through the middle of the pitch.

Stoke looked exhausted and uninspired in the second half, and will need to alter their tactics if they want a victory against Reading on Saturday. They must find more attacking threat in the final third as they failed to create meaningful chances against Millwall.
