What Your Third Grader Should Know

Date:

Children go through different stages in school. As the child grows, you start to introduce various areas of study. As a good teacher, you want the best for the children, and you want your effort in teaching to impact the children’s life.

During third grade, you will introduce some concepts that the child should know within the year. Below are the things you should cover for a third-grader.

About Third Grade Education

Third grade involves more than what a child mastered in the 1st and 2nd grade. The child is now ready to learn 3rd grade science projects and build more skills by referring to books and other learning materials. This is also the time to start thinking globally, learning about the world, and developing more complex skills.

Things Third Graders Should Know

Third-grade reading

A third-grade child is no longer learning to read. He/she can now read books with more complex reading techniques, although they may find some subjects more interesting than others. Below is what the child should learn.

  • Use text clues to expand vocabulary.
  • Use dictionaries for reference and understand new terminologies.
  • Ask questions and make references while also writing summaries.
  • Be able to describe characters when reading stories.
  • Reading longer chapters and identifying main points.
  • If a child doesn’t understand the meaning, check it out and help them understand.
  • Identify different authors when reading books, whether online or when reading physical books.

As a teacher, you can interview the child to test their reading skills to become better and more independent readers. It would be best to teach kids to talk about what they read and get it summarized into more readable texts.

Third-grade writing

Third graders continue to take the fundamental writing skills they acquired in 2nd grade. This increases their writing skills, making them more sophisticated. Let the child plan, revise, and edit tests, enabling them to practice writing pieces within a short period. Below are the areas of focus.

  • Use punctuation correctly.
  • Use transition words when wiring paragraphs.
  • Master nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
  • Know suffixes, prefixes, and homophones.
  • Be able to revise and edit after writing.
  • Write about events, opinions and give a conclusion.
  • Introduce a topic and use facts and definitions when writing.

A third-grader should spend average time writing. Ranging from 30 minutes depending on the content they are writing. During this time, a third grader should also start getting more comfortable with technology, research, and write pieces from the internet.

Third-grade science

Children get introduced to 3rd-grade science projects to experiment and observe things using various techniques and methodologies. The science curriculum could contain nature, water cycle, weather changes, recycling, human body, and animal species.

The child should learn to experiment, prove and disprove hypotheses, analyze graphs and charts, type information on the computer using a keyboard, become more tech-savvy, and research anything through the internet.

In Conclusion

Third grade is such an exciting time for the learner as they explore new things and grow better by the day. Always be there to clarify areas the child might not be conversant with.
