• You must hold a valid British citizen passport and not a British National Overseas passport.
• Your passport must have at least two blank pages so that it can be stamped by the immigration department during the time of your exit from the country. 
• Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your entry into the country; otherwise, you will have to apply for another visa.
• You must have sufficient evidence that proves that you will not be staying beyond 45 days; an onward or return ticket works as the best form of proof.

Entry & Exit Rules

The entry and exit rules that all British citizens must follow if they want to travel visa-free to Vietnam are: 

• The visa waiver policy is applicable for all ports of entry, so you can enter the country through any airport, land border, or seaport.
• There is no need to apply for a visa before the trip if your stay in the country is within 45 days, which is the allowed period.
• If you leave the country of Vietnam in less than 45 days when travelling visa-free, then the status will be reset. The rule of at least 30 30-day gap between two visa-free travels isn’t valid anymore, so you will be granted another 45-day visit when you re-enter the country.
• Your passport will be stamped by the immigration official located at the port.

Extension & Overstay Rules

A Vietnam visa extension isn’t applicable when travelling visa-free. However, if you plan to stay beyond the 45 days that are allowed under the visa waiver policy, then you will have to face a few repercussions.

Overstaying in Vietnam even for one day leads to penalties. You will have to pay hefty fines to the authority for such an action. Other than that, there is also a risk of deportation in such a scenario. So, it is best if you avoid such scenarios. In case you feel like you have to stay in the country for more than 45 days, then you must leave the country while there is still time and re-enter. 

Otherwise, you can also apply for an eVisa if you wish to stay longer. The eVisa for Vietnam now comes with a validity of 90 days and not 30 days. It is applied in the following order. 

• Visit the online portal. 
• Fill out the application form for the Vietnam eVisa. 
• Add scanned copies of necessary documents like a valid passport, a recent passport-sized photograph, bank statements, flight tickets, and other documents that the authority asks for. 
• Pay the fee for your eVisa application using a debit or credit card. 
• Wait for 24 to 72 hours for the application to get approved. 
• Print some copies of the approval letter after receiving it in your used email ID. 
• Contact the Helpdesk if you do not get the letter in time. 

When You Still Need a Visa

A visa-free trip won’t always be an option. So, in such a scenario, you will have to apply for a visa for Vietnam for British citizens. These scenarios include:

• If you are staying beyond 45 days.
• If you are traveling for purposes like long-term work, study, or residency.

• The best months to visit Vietnam are between October to April, the weather stays pleasant and dry during this time, and there is low humidity, suitable for all.

• Respect the local customs and cultural etiquette when visiting the country.
• Plan your stay in advance to avoid last-minute issues. 
• Carry your required medications with you. 
• Bring a universal adapter to charge your electronics without any issue. 
• Do not overpack and carry clothes according to the season. 
• Always stay near tourist attractions to save money, instead of spending on transportation. 
• Keep the emergency number of the local authority handy, 113 is for the Police, 115 is for medical emergencies, and 114 is for fire.

Health Requirements

There aren’t many health requirements for UK citizens visiting Vietnam. However, it is recommended to get health insurance before the trip to proactively deal with any health emergencies.
