Salute to Belize Independence Statement

From Cynthia M. Ellis

and Widow of the late Harriot Wentworth Topsey

Today, on this momentous occasion of Belize’s 42nd Independence, I am reminded of the deep and enduring legacy left by both my father, Godsman Celestino Ellis, and my beloved husband, Harriot Wentworth Topsey. Their unwavering commitment to our homeland, Belize, and their dedication to preserving our indigenous heritage continue to inspire me and all who were fortunate to know them.

Belize, a nation so rich in cultural diversity and natural beauty, stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of its people. It is a land where the echoes of our ancestors’ wisdom guide us, and the rhythms of our indigenous traditions continue to pulse through our veins.

Today, as we celebrate our nation’s forty second independence, we must also remember our recent history. It is a history not so long ago, one that should forever haunt and plague us. It is a history that reminds us of the struggles and sacrifices made by our forebearers, as well as the triumphs they achieved in the face of adversity.

As Belizeans and indigenous people, we must reflect on this history, for it shapes our identity and defines our path forward. We are the descendants of those who fought for freedom and self-determination, and we carry their legacy in our hearts.

My father, Godsman Celestino Ellis, was a visionary educator and agricultural pioneer who believed in the transformative power of education and the importance of nurturing our land. His love for Belize was unwavering, and his dedication to our nation’s betterment was unmatched.

My late husband, Harriot Wentworth Topsey, was a trailblazing archaeologist who unearthed the treasures of our past, connecting us to the ancient civilizations that once thrived on this soil. His work has not only deepened our understanding of Belize’s history but has also ignited a passion for preservation.

Today, as I stand  as Ambassador at Large for the Garifuna Nation, I am reminded of the responsibility we carry as Belizeans and indigenous people. We must honor the legacy of those who came before us by continuing to work tirelessly for the betterment of our country and the preservation of our cultural heritage.

Let us remember who we are and where we come from, for it is in understanding our past that we can shape our future. Let us celebrate our Belizean identity and our indigenous roots, knowing that our diversity is our strength.

On this day of the 42nd Belizean Independence, let us salute the indomitable spirit of our people, the beauty of our land, and the promise of a brighter future. May we continue to strive for excellence and embrace the values of unity, resilience, and determination that define us as a nation.

Happy Independence Day, Belize!

With heartfelt gratitude and love for our country,

“Aba Isieni”
