The University of Tennessee appointed R.J. Hynda as interim dean to lead the largest university in a two-year pilot program to overhaul its internal structure.
A massive reorganization of the College of Arts and Sciences, met with widespread faculty opposition, affected more than 700 faculty members and more than 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
“(Hinder) will miss his leadership in the provost’s office, but I am excited about the work he will do to serve the students, faculty and staff of the College of Arts and Sciences,” Provost and Vice Provost John Jomczyk said in a memo. . to college.
Instead of one dean overseeing more than 30 department heads (as the university currently operates), three deans will report to one executive dean. Hind is planning how this new structure will work.
This is not a new way of structuring the university. The University of Georgia, one of UT’s more ambitious counterparts, also has a dean of faculty structure.
Theresa Lee, current dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will retire at the end of this academic year. Until then, he and Hind will work closely together to run the university until the new structure becomes operational in July 2023.
Hind will maintain this feature until the end of the two-year pilot program.
Hind, the interim dean, is familiar with UT, or the College of Arts and Sciences. He is currently Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor of Chemistry, and was previously Associate Dean for Academic Programs. He was also a member of the steering committee for the university’s new budget model. The new incentive-based budget model gives academic units more control over their own budgets.
Now that an interim dean has been announced, three deans of faculties will be appointed to oversee:
Department of Arts and Humanities
Institute of Social Sciences
Department of natural science and mathematics
The deans of the departments are appointed in the company on the recommendation of a committee appointed by Hind.
Hind will develop a new strategic plan for the university during a two-year transition period ending in early fall 2025.
It remains to be seen how universities and colleges will decide which pilot model to follow.
