People get obsessed with a beautiful body shape and normal body weight. There are hundreds of dietitians and gym experts helping them find the way out to reduce excess body weight. It has been like a global issue, gaining weight regardless of age, race, or gender. Even children suffer from overweight and disfigured bodies, fat deposits hanging here and there from the body. Obesity is a millennial villain. As such it shows only cosmetic problems but obese persons develop difficulties like tiredness or palpitation soon. Many serious diseases develop in obese people like diabetes ( weight loss & diabetes ). Around the world, doctors advise everyone to maintain a healthy weight to prevent or cure most diseases.

Ayurveda starts the advice to avoid obesity right from the dinacharya or daily routine while describing vyaayama or exercise. Athisthoola or excessively obese person is counted as athinindya or most degraded or disgraceful people. They are considered not treatable because they have extremely imbalanced body functions. Reasons for obesity can be hereditary or environmental. Despite the excess body weight, sthoola or obese person is said to have a weak body, immune system, and assimilation power. His food is mostly transformed into fat tissue and other body tissues lack nourishment. This happens while the channels in the body are obstructed. The person feels excess hunger but can not assimilate the nutrients well. Despite overeating, the obese person is mostly malnourished weak, and less energetic. Ayurveda suggests the obese should be managed with utmost care. Proper diet, lifestyle, medicines, and therapeutic procedures are advised to manage the overweight and the related problems. Some of the most common & effective Ayurvedic formulations for weight loss are as follows:

1. Varasanadi kwatham

It is an Ayurvedic formulation for obesity and hyperlipidaemia. It can be used in any condition of impaired fat metabolism. It is used in reducing body weight and cases of hyperlipidaemia. It helps manage complications of obesity ( Weight loss in diabetes ) like diabetes and hypercholesterolemia. The combination has drying or Rookshana property and eliminates unwanted kleda (excess water & fluid accumulation) in the body. It can normalise the water & electrolyte balance. It works as anthelmintic. Also, it is beneficial in Kapha-dominant anaemia. It is found beneficial in atherosclerosis. This medicine is made by combining many herbs. They include

Pathya(Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD)

Being among the groups of main drugs in Ayurveda, one of the Rasayana drugs, it is used in a wide variety of diseases as it possesses anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-diabetic, anti-mutagenic anti-oxidant anti-ulcer, and wound-healing properties.

Aksha (Terminalia bellerica (GAERTN.) ROXB.

Very effectively used in the management of gastric diseases, leukoderma, allergic rhinitis, etc, this herb is also beneficial in allergic skin diseases. It has laxative and anti-inflammatory actions. It is also used as a general health tonic and a rejuvenator. It is found beneficial in haemorrhoids.

Dhatri (Emblica officinalis GAERTN.)

 Commonly known as Amla or Indian gooseberry, this herb has strong antioxidant activity. It is one of the most famous herbs in the traditional Ayurveda and other traditional health systems. It is well known for immunomodulatory, aphrodisiac, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective actions. It is widely used for its remedial effects on cancer and diabetes also. 

Asana (Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb.)

It is anti-pyretic, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac. It is used as a cooling external application for headaches and inflammations on skin and joints. It is found beneficial in the management of stomach & intestinal ulcers and mental disorders.

Agni/Chitraka (Plumbago zeylanica L.)

It aids digestion and increases appetite. It enhances the proper assimilation of nutrients. It has anti-inflammatory action. It can also be used in liver diseases.

Aya:patra or thin sheets of Iron.

  • Nisa (Curcuma longa L.)

Turmeric is a food as well as medicine. It is beneficial in heartburn. It works in digestive disorders like diarrhoea, gas trouble, and bloating. It is well known for detoxification and effect in various cases of carcinoma. It is good for the skin both to reduce rashes & skin diseases and to improve skin texture & complexion. It is the main ingredient in many cosmetics. Turmeric is beneficial in memory loss and diseases of the liver & gallbladder. It can reduce swelling and help with difficulties related to arthritis. It has remarkable anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Varasanadi kashayam is asked to be taken with honey.

2. Vidangadi churnam

This is the powder form of herbs used in the treatment of helminthiasis, obesity ( medicine for weight loss ), and associated disorders. It is beneficial in general fatigue, lethargy, inability to exercise, diabetes, and other complications possible after obesity. It is made up of herbs like Vidanga(embelia ribes), Rock salt, Ash of barley plant, Kampillaka ( Mallotus philippinensis), and Haritaki ( Terminlia chebula). It should be taken after expert advice, once the dosage and the mode of intake are decided after proper evaluation. Overdose of this combination may cause discomforts especially in pregnant and lactating women.

3.  Triphala

Triphala, the famous combination used in Ayurveda, as a group of three herbal fruits alone itself is very beneficial in obesity. As we have already seen, it is the combination of herbs named Pathya (Terminalia chebula RETZ. & WILLD) Aksha (Terminalia bellerica (GAERTN.) ROXB. And Dhatri (Emblica officinalis GAERTN.) Apart from single uses, these three fruits, when used together, show more benefits. It comes under Rasayana (rejuvenating) drugs that ensure the proper assimilation and nourishment of the body. Triphala is a mild purgative when used in moderate doses. It works as Rookshana (drying up) and removes excess Kleda (moisture) from the body channels and tissues. By removing such unwanted Kleda, it enhances Agni (digestive power & assimilative power). It can be taken with hot water, or honey as per the expert advice.

 4.  Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa L.)

Commonly known as spreading hogweed, Punarnava is a widely available herb. The name Punarnava means the capability to repair and regenerate itself. While taken internally, the same action is observed in body cells & tissues. It is a famous anti-inflammatory herb. It is well known for its diuretic and anti oedematous properties. In obesity, Punarnava helps remove the obstructions in body channels. This reduces the abnormal fat deposits and excess adipose tissue formation. It is a diuretic that balances the water retention at the same time helping to remove the oedema in visceral organs. This also helps in complications like kidney disorders, ascites, splenomegaly, etc. It removes the unwanted fluid collection in tissues and reduces swelling and thereby reverse inflammation.

 5. Guggulu

It is one of the most known herbs used in obesity worldwide. Guggulu is the resin or gum collected from the plant Commiphora Mukul. The tree grows mostly in the Himalayas or high-altitude areas in tropical forests. It contains the plant sterol called guggulsterone that promotes loss of body weight. Guggulu is also beneficial in reducing triglycerides and bad cholesterol. It has a scraping effect on deposited waste products in the body. It helps in the management of complications of obesity like arthritis, skin diseases, diabetes, and atherosclerosis.
