The UK government has started the tendering process for a contract that could be worth up to £12 billion (14 billion dollars) to the tech suppliers who get the job.
According to official documents, the competition’s launch has been delayed by approximately four months, adding £4 billion ($4.73 billion) to the potential value.
The framework agreement, under which suppliers negotiate prices based on an indicative volume of work, is being procured by Crown Commercial Services, the Cabinet Office’s commercial wing. It is scheduled to begin in September 2023. It includes hardware, software, sustainability and circular IT, health and social care technology, education technology, information assured technology (best practice, etc.), and technology catalog in eight lots.
The contract is expected to last until March 2026, but bids must be submitted by April 4, leaving vendors’ and resellers’ teams with little time to prepare. Due to the apparent delay in the procurement, they might also be annoyed.
The contract’s prior information notice, which allows the government to speak with suppliers prior to the start of official competition, went live in April 2022 and set the maximum value at £8 billion. It promised to publish the contract notice at the start of November, which sets the stage for the competition.
This commercial agreement will be the preferred vehicle for all commodity technology products and associated services required by the UK central government and other organizations in the public sector. Examples of this agreement’s scope include, but are not limited to: printers, scanners, servers, storage, infrastructure, networking, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) devices… and off-the-shelf software and associated services, the Prior Information Notice states.
Buyers from all parts of the public sector can sign framework agreements to get better prices and save time and money during the procurement process. Departments of the central government, the NHS, local governments, the fire services, and a long list of partners from the third sector could be buyers.
The competition is for a framework agreement known as RM6098, which is expected to take over from three previous framework agreements: Technology Online Purchasing Content expires in November 2023, Technology Products and Associated Services expires in December 2023, and Education Technology expires in June 2023.
