The three Abrahamic religions, by Professor Tony Taliaferro Lawrence Bible Institute Sierra Leone

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all trace their roots back to the figure of Abraham in the Bible. He is revered as a patriarch and a prophet in all three faiths, and his story serves as the foundation for their beliefs.

However, despite their shared origins, the three religions have faced numerous divisions and conflicts throughout history. These divisions have caused much strife and animosity, often leading to violence and prejudice between followers of different faiths.

The first major division occurred during the time of Abraham himself. Despite his obedience to God and his faith in the promise of a great nation, he struggled with infertility and his wife Sarah was unable to bear children. This led to the birth of Ishmael, Abraham’s son with his servant Hagar. However, when Sarah miraculously conceived and gave birth to Isaac, the son of the promise, tensions arose between the two brothers and their mothers.

This division between Ishmael, who is considered the ancestor of the Arab people and Muslims, and Isaac, who is seen as the ancestor of Jewish and Christian people, would continue to play a role in the conflicts between the three religions for centuries to come.

As time passed, each religion developed its own unique beliefs and practices, leading to further divisions. While all three share a belief in one God, they have different interpretations of who that God is and how He should be worshipped. This has led to disagreements and conflicts over religious practices and rituals.

One of the most significant divisions in Christianity occurred during the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century. This movement, led by Martin Luther, rejected the authority of the Catholic Church and sparked a rift between Catholics and Protestants that is still evident today.

In Islam, there have been numerous sects and divisions throughout history, with the two main branches being Sunni and Shia. These divisions stem from a disagreement over who should be the rightful successor of the Prophet Muhammad.

Unfortunately, the divisions and conflicts within the Abrahamic religions have not been limited to issues of faith. Throughout history, there have been numerous cases of violence and persecution towards members of other faiths. From the Crusades to the Inquisition to the conflicts in the Middle East, religion has often been used as a justification for war and discrimination.

Despite these divisions and conflicts, there are also many examples of unity and cooperation between followers of the Abrahamic faiths. In times of crisis, people of different religious backgrounds have come together to provide aid and support to those in need. Interfaith dialogue and cooperation have also been promoted as a means to bridge the divides between the religions.

One thing that all three religions have in common is their belief in the importance of peace, love, and compassion. The divisions that exist are not inherent to the religions themselves, but rather a result of human interpretation and actions. As the world becomes more interconnected and globalized, it is crucial for followers of the Abrahamic religions to find common ground and work towards peace and understanding.

If Abraham were alive today, he would surely be saddened by the divisions and conflicts within his family of faiths. He would remind us of the importance of unity and compassion and urge us to overcome our differences in the name of our shared heritage. After all, the religions that bear his name all share the same belief in the power of love and the unity of humanity. It is time for us to put those beliefs into action and work towards a world where all religions can coexist peacefully.
