Spotting a scammer has become so easy to do, numerous people have been reporting certain characteristics that have made scammers stand out. There are several behavioral traits that one can pick up while speaking to someone on an online dating app. Let’s take a look at one of my own experiences with being in contact with a scammer.
How I Got Scammed for More Than $500 Through an Online Dating Scam!
While on a dating site, I had matched with someone who I thought was a really nice guy. He had started the conversation, and I had responded thinking nothing of it at first as I had no other matches and by the looks of his profile picture, he seemed my type.
It wasn’t until after the general small talk that I had started noticing that this wasn’t just a normal conversation. A lot of spelling and grammar mistakes were made on his end, but because he was French, I assumed it was because English was not his first language. He told me that he was working in the Military as an IT Specialist which I believed as he stated that his mom was from France but his dad was an American.
Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until I struggled to get him to do video calls, or even get a recent photo for weeks. He also never sent voice notes, and was always too busy to take a phone call yet was always available to text.
When I confronted him about all of the above, he got defensive stating that his job was stressful and he was always the only one “on” standby when technical issues arose so he couldn’t be fully engaged over the phone as it would be distracting.
He never suggested speaking on other platforms, we solely communicated on the dating website which was why I hadn’t found it strange when he reached out to me saying that he needed money to get home to his mom who was ill.
I had mentioned that he worked for the Government but he told me he had no money because he was paying for all her medications and treatments and that the company would get him home but he’d have no money once he got back.
He stated that he only needed $500 and that he would pay it back as soon as his salary had been paid in since it was the middle of the month. I felt that I could help him and so I transferred the money. Immediately after he confirmed that he had received the money he stopped speaking to me. Two weeks later and I still had no response or my money.
I felt stupid and helpless, I was also embarrassed at the fact that I had been scammed. I had told my best friend and she had suggested I use Chargeback way and that they could help me recover my money.

I visited their online platform and filled in a form stating my case. They got in touch with me and I gave them as much detail as I could about the guy on the dating site. They were able to get hold of him and managed to have my money given back to me.
