1. Listening to other people can be a life-changing experience

Some people talk and talk without ever listening. When you listen, though, don’t just listen to what the person is saying. Also listen to how they say it and, more importantly, what they’re not saying. Experience is the best teacher, so why not take every opportunity to learn from the experiences of others? 2. Accept that mistakes will happen and be okay with them

It takes courage to go out into the world and put yourself out there, especially when you know that not everyone will understand your ideas or agree with them. Be open-minded and flexible enough to recognize that your opinions are just one of many.

3. There are many ways to keep track of your accomplishments in the professional sphere

These can be things like awards and honors, or articles that mention you by name. Awards and recognition can help demonstrate your value at work. Awards can include things like, “Most Valuable Employee”.

Awards should be meaningful and so should the accomplishments that earn them. Quantifying them is a good way – for example saying “I saved the company over $100,000 last year.”

4. When it comes to performance evaluations, don’t wait until you receive one before you ask your manager for feedback.

Many companies use the annual performance evaluation as a chance for employees to update their progress and figure out what they need to work on more than others. It is important to understand that not all employers do this, so make sure you ask what kind of rubric you are being evaluated on, if at all possible. This way, you can concentrate on improving the things that matter most in advance of your review date.

5. Don’t shape your entire work philosophy around the opinion of your boss

All bosses make mistakes, and have their own opinion about you that might be based on their own past experiences, as opposed to your skills and work. You may need to put evidence in front of them from time to time, demonstrating your value to the team. Depending on their personality, though, this might need to be done with subtlety and finesse.

6. If you have a mentor, great. If not, find one

This person should be someone who is at a place in their career that you would like to be one day. That way, they will have gone down the road before you and know what the pitfalls are.

The critical thing, though, is that they are someone who cares about your success and is invested in making sure that you are achieving your full potential.

7. Invest time and energy in the things that you enjoy doing outside of your career

When you look back on the course of your life at the end of it, it is unlikely that you will wish you had spent less time on your hobbies and passions and more time at the office. So, figure out what activities bring you the most fulfillment in life.

Maybe you love to scrapbook. Maybe you love to sing. If you’re not sure yet what it might be that gives your life that extra spark, then make that your first project – finding out!

8. Avoid harsh judgments

When you’re young, either in age or in your career, it’s tempting to believe that other people are simply lazy or unmotivated when their performance isn’t up to par. But after some time, you might see things differently, become more understanding of other peoples’ viewpoints and circumstances. Believing that you are always right leaves you no room for growth.
