Also known as Sword Lake, Hoan Kiem Lake is a natural freshwater lake with an area of about 12ha located in the center of Hanoi City – Hang Trong Ward, Hoan Kiem District. This Vietnam lake was originally a distributary of the Red River that was divided by Lord Trinh into two lakes Ta Vong and Huu Vong. The latter was filled by the French army, only Ta Vong Lake was left and is now Hoan Kiem Lake. The name of this famous lake in Vietnam means “returning the sword”, appearing in the early 15th century associated with the legend of King Le Loi returning the sword to the Turtle God. 

Not only is it a historical relic of Hanoi, but Hoan Kiem Lake is also a tourist destination surrounded by many interesting attractions and beautiful architecture. Some of them can be mentioned such as Ngoc Son Temple, Turtle Tower, Hanoi Old Quarter, Hanoi Opera House, Walking Street, …

3 – Ba Be Lake – top 5 lakes in Vietnam 

Ba Be Lake has an area of more than 650ha, located in the area of Ba Be National Park, Nam Mau Commune, Ba Be District, Bac Kan Province. The lake was formed about 200 million years ago due to a large geological upheaval, making the geology and geomorphology of the area extremely complex and unique, creating a spectacular scenery and various ecosystems. In 1995, Ba Be Lake was recognized as one of the 20 special freshwater lakes in the world that need to be protected.

Also known as Sea Lake Pleiku, this is a freshwater lake with an area of ​​over 200ha in Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province, belonging to Bien Ho – Chu Dang Ya ecotourism area. According to studies, Lake T’Nung is an ancient volcanic crater, which has been turned off, resulting in the water so deep that the bottom cannot be seen.

Coming to this Vietnam lake, you can rent boats or motorboats to roam on the lake, enjoy the majestic scenery as well as fish.  Around the lake are the villages of ethnic people such as Ba Na and Gia Rai, you can stop by and get acquainted with them, check out the handicraft products, or taste the traditional dishes here. One of the most beautiful lakes in Vietnam in general, and Central Highland in particular, T’Nung Lake is especially large and often has large waves, leading to the name “sea lake”. In the middle of the lake, there is a long path leading to the white marble statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva that is 15m high, a spiritual tourist attraction.

5 – Tuyen Lam Lake

With an area of about 320 hectares, Tuyen Lam Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Da Lat City, Lam Dong Province. This lake was built from 1982 to 1987, originally to block Da Trea stream and named Quang Trung Lake, later turned into Tuyen Lam Lake. 

This lake is located about 2km from Datanla Waterfall, near Phung Hoang Mountain and Truc Lam Zen Monastery. Tuyen Lam Lake is one of the few major lakes in Vietnam that is artificial, but the surrounding pine forests and the mountain scenery are all-natural, harmoniously blending to create a beautiful poetic scene. The whole area is considered a complex with many beautiful landscapes and various tourist activities such as overnight camping, kayaking, trekking Mount Pinhatt, sightseeing around the lake on a boat, … 

Datanla Waterfall

Truc Lam Zen Monastery

As the largest Buddhist work in the country, this Monastery is located on top of Phung Hoang mountain, overlooking the peaceful and poetic Tuyen Lam Lake.
