Twenty-seven years in the same industry. A voluntary redundancy offer. No backup plan. For most professionals, that combination sounds like a recipe for anxiety. For Julia, it became the catalyst for complete reinvention.
The Leap Without a Net
In 2017, Julia was a seasoned IT professional in the aviation sector, spending nearly three decades in customer-facing roles. When voluntary redundancy appeared on the table, she made what many would consider a risky decision — she took it.
“It was a bold move and an uncertain one,” she recalls. “I didn’t have a grand plan or a business idea ready to go. What I did have was a strong sense that I was ready for something different.”
That “something different” wasn’t clearly defined. Julia knew she excelled at building genuine connections with people, a skill honed over years of client interaction. What she didn’t know was how to translate that strength beyond the confines of a corporate job title.
Without a roadmap, she remained open to possibilities. When a friend mentioned a coaching seminar, Julia attended without firm expectations. What she found there changed the trajectory of her professional life.
The Moment of Recognition
The seminar resonated in ways Julia hadn’t anticipated. In the conversations about mentoring, listening, and problem-solving, she recognised fundamental aspects of herself — skills she’d been using informally for years without formal recognition or framework.
“I didn’t realise it then, but that moment set me on a completely new path,” she reflects.

Recognition led to commitment. Julia enrolled in an intensive 18-month coaching accreditation programme, pursuing an ILM Level 7 qualification that demanded full-time study, deep personal reflection, and professional development on multiple fronts.
The learning curve was steep, pushing Julia both professionally and personally. But completion brought confidence — enough to launch her own practice, which she named Premier Coaching.
Building a Distinctive Practice

Today, Julia works with high-performing professionals navigating career crossroads. Her clients often share common experiences: seeking fresh challenges, questioning conventional definitions of success, or feeling misaligned with their current professional position.
“Many feel quietly out of step with where they’ve ended up,” Julia explains. “I help them step back, reconnect with their values and strengths, and move forward with clarity and intention.”
What distinguishes Julia’s approach is her foundation in Character Strengths methodology — a scientifically validated tool that helps clients understand their optimal functioning. Rather than beginning with strategic career planning, Julia starts with deep exploration of core values and inherent strengths.
“By bringing core values and strengths to the surface, your personal characteristics become fully aligned with your professional direction,” she says. “That’s where fulfilment starts to feel real.”
The methodology creates career plans that feel authentic and achievable, not merely strategic on paper.
From Solo Practice to Collaborative Platform
In 2023, Julia attended Fab Collab, a networking event for women in business. A conversation there with Valerie Merrill, founder of Merrill Consultants Ltd, revealed shared values, complementary professional experience, and mutual interest in creating something beyond traditional business promotion.

What began as a casual discussion about raising visibility evolved into a concrete project. The two decided a podcast could provide the right platform — not for selling, but for meaningful conversation.
The Secrets of Learning and Development launched with intentional positioning: accessible, thoughtful, authentic. Julia and Valerie invited guests who had lived experience, not just academic knowledge, to share.
The approach resonated. In December 2025, the podcast received Podcast of the Year recognition at the Women’s Business Awards — an acknowledgment, Julia notes, of conversational honesty and consistency rather than production polish alone.

Lessons From the Journey
Julia identifies several insights from her career transition:
- Outgrowing previous definitions of success represents progress, not failure
- Coaching others requires continuous personal growth from the coach
- Effective collaboration requires mutual respect and shared values over ego
- Professional visibility stems from honesty and consistency, not volume
Looking Forward
From corporate aviation IT to coaching practice founder to award-winning podcast co-host, Julia’s journey defied conventional career mapping.
“This journey wasn’t something I could have mapped out,” she reflects. “It has been deeply fulfilling.”
And despite the accolades and established practice, Julia maintains she’s just beginning.
For professionals contemplating similar transitions — those sensing misalignment between current position and authentic calling — Julia’s story offers perspective. Sometimes the boldest professional move is taking redundancy without a backup plan, attending a seminar on a friend’s recommendation, and remaining genuinely open to what emerges next.
