Kiamie Package Store’s roots are deeply entwined with the history of Oxford, Mississippi. It all began when founder Alex Kiamie Sr. moved to Oxford in 1952 to open a diner (aptly named Kiamie’s). Although the original building now houses a Domino’s Pizza, it still serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Kiamie family’s entrepreneurship. Back then, dining options in Oxford were limited, and Kiamie’s became a cherished establishment within the community.
As Oxford and Ole Miss flourished, Kiamie Sr.’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to expand his business ventures. In addition to the diner, he introduced Kiamie Lanes (a bowling alley), a laundromat, a car wash, and eventually the Kiamie Package Store. Kiamie Sr.’s foresight into the growth of the region and his adaptability to the community’s needs allowed the family’s businesses to flourish with the changing times.
In 1966, after the end of Prohibition in Mississippi, Kiamie Sr. seized the opportunity to purchase a liquor license, establishing what is now the oldest continuously operating package store in the state. This venture laid the foundation for the family’s involvement in the wine and liquor industry.

A Legacy Passed Down Through Generations
In the early 1990s, the torch was passed to Alex Kiamie Jr., called just “Alex,” who was a graduate of Ole Miss and a former cheerleader for the Rebels. Alex’s journey reflects the multifaceted nature of his family’s enterprise, as he worked his way through all levels of the family businesses, from delivering food late at night to racking pool balls for ten cents a rack. Today, Alex may be retired, but he continues to oversee the operations of Kiamie Package Store, contributing to its loyalty and longevity.
The present proprietor, Alex Kiamie III, affectionately known as “A.J.,” is also a graduate of Ole Miss and a former Rebels football player. With 12 years of experience in the wine and spirits industry and extensive knowledge of spirits, A.J. has become a sommelier and recognized expert in the field. Over the years, he has explored vineyards in California, Oregon, Italy, and France, and delved into the products and processes of distilleries in Scotland, Ireland, Kentucky, and Tennessee. A.J. is the go-to expert for setting up restaurant wine lists in Oxford and is known for hosting wine and liquor tasting events for local charities and groups.
Each member of the Kiamie family has brought their unique strengths and tastes to the table, leading Kiamie Package Store to become the institution it is today.
