Sensor invented by Toronto-area college student helps detect particles of light

Date:

A 21-year-old scientist and inventor has been named as the Winner of Geneva Invention Exhibition.

Erfan Nouraee, from Toronto, Ontario, has invented new technologies across a range of fields, including a low-cost device that can make high-speed, reliable internet available for rural and remote areas.

He said he hoped he could inspire others to dream up ideas to “solve the world’s problems”.

Erfan was chosen from a field of 1000 world-based nominees, which was whittled down to hundred finalists by a committee of referees.

He and the other finalists were honored in a ceremony.

In an interview with City News Toronto, Erfan said: “I went on the internet and I found that a third of the world’s population is still without access to high-speed internet. It was then that I knew I had to do something.

“I learned that people without access to the internet face significant challenges in terms of education, economic opportunities, and social connectivity.

“The Photon Detector has proven accurate 95 percent of the time and is more sensitive than current sensors.

“So I really want to put out that message: We can invent the tools we need to create a better world.”

Erfan has patented his photon detector, and is talking with companies about developing it into a simple, over-the-counter device, which could eventually provide high-speed internet for all areas.

The sensor basically produces high-resolution messages in photonics devices in both higher-quality and lower cost. In fact, Erfan Nouraee said it has caught the attention of famous investors and manufacturers who have now reached out to work with his start-up company to manufacture and distribute the sensor this year.

At the industrial level, optical fibre cables tend to lose their quality and power, but Nouraee’s invention solves this by providing photon detection and a processing system, that lessens the noises from optical signals.

Erfan was previously named “Iran’s top young scientist” for inventing a low-cost device to detect photoelectric radiation.

The young inventor’s creations had already earned him accolades, including being named the landmark title of “Inventor” by the International Federation of Inventors’ Associations (IFIA), and a win in his age group at the 19th Khwarizmi Youth Awards.

Geneva Invention Exhibition is a unique opportunity for industrial and commercial companies, universities, inventors and researchers, associations, private and state organisms and institutions to present their inventions, the results of their research and their new products.

The exhibition where manufacturers, commercial traders and financiers will find 1,000 innovations ready to be marketed. All exhibited innovations being showcased for the first time.
