Gone are the days when people used to rely on chemicals to purify water for domestic use. What is Reverse Osmosis? 

Commonly referred to as RO, reverse osmosis involves water purification and filtration by relying on the effects of pressure generated at different quantities and impacts on both sides of a semi-permeable membrane. The membrane filters out contaminants in the water as the water passes through the membrane due to the pressure deficit on the sides of the membrane. However, the technology reverses this effect by creating a semi-permeable membrane and pressure forcing the water to move from a side with more concertation to a low concentration through a membrane. The movement through the membrane creates a balance in the water levels on either side of the membrane. To boost the process’s effectiveness, pressure is applied on one side, which is the side with unpurified water. This forces the water to sieve through the membrane to the other side with low pressure hence the purification and filtration.  

The membrane has different roles, and the first is to create an imbalance in pressure and concentration, which would then force liquid movement across. Secondly, the membrane is used as a purification agent. It is not an ordinary membrane; it has integrated filtration systems and technologies. The application of a membrane is significant for separating large and smaller molecules. Water molecules tend to be smaller than most impurities contained; hence while passing through the membrane, only the smaller particles will go through, while the large ones get trapped on the membrane surface. 

 Further modification of the membrane improves the process efficiency and effectiveness, leading to a reliable purification system that can protect people from effective microorganisms unobservable to the eye yet freely living and suspended in drinking water.  

The Application of Reverse Osmosis Technologies 

The reverse osmosis technologies can be applied in different ways. The first is the industrial application which involves water purification systems in industries such as desalination plants, water treatment, sewer treatment, recycling, and other water management systems. These systems mainly use the RO in subsequent processes and stages to improve the purity levels until the last stage, where water is pumped for public and community use.  

The second application is in the home water treatment system; as part of your house water distribution system, you can ask the technician to install a small-scale RO system. This will be effective if you use a groundwater system or the water used at home has to travel a long distance before reaching your house. You can also add it to the home rainwater collection system to purify the water from the iron sheet to make it suitable for drinking. As an additional safety system, you can install it in specific locations to purify the water, especially water needed for kitchen use. It is also used for other equipment, such as RVs for camping, to help purify water obtained locally at the camping site or purchased.

One of the leading costs for the desalination system is energy bills used in the electrolysis process, which is used to remove salts from the water. You can reduce energy bills using the RO system and electrolysis to remove any remaining salts. Alternatively, you can integrate it at different stages in the electrolysis process to reduce energy consumption and salt concentration in the water.

Most RO systems are optimized to increase their purification potentials and system. They can trap up to 99% of the suspended bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, boosting health and water safety. They can also remove other elements, such as ions, and organic and inorganic compounds, that can be harmful for consumption.
