A deep analysis of police data reveal a worrying picture of burglaries in Auckland. With data analysis a new report shows over 16,000 burglaries, coming out to a 1-in-36 chance of suffering a home burglary in Auckland in 2023.
Auckland is getting bigger every year, both by size and population. With growing population and entering into an economic recession, the city is suffering alarmingly rising crime rates. Including residential burglaries which make up a vast majority of all Auckland break-ins.
In light of this, to deter and stop your family house from being broken into, there has never been a better time to invest into smart home security with CCTV cameras.
Total residential break ins
Thanks to a 2022 report compiled by Auckland CCTV based on police data on victimisations in New Zealand, you can now see exactly how many burglaries happened. This report covers the entire Auckland region, from the urban downtown to rural areas in Clevedon and Waitakere.
Filtering out all commercial and public property data from the police report and leaving only explicitly residential/private dwelling data. We get a total figure of 16,857 burglaries/unlawful entries in Auckland over all of 2022.
This averages out to 1405 burglaries a month.
46 burglaries every single day.
Worst Neighbourhoods by burglaries
It may be of interest to readers to know which areas are the hardest hit by residential break-ins. The police data is broken down by local areas, the top 3 worst hit are included here.
Auckland Central
390 residential break-ins
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Auckland Central is by far the worst culprit in these statistics. Due to its high population density and high traffic, it has many criminals and many targets. It is also very easy to get in and out of the area. As the central hub of the city, there are many routes in and out of the area.
Takanini South
196 residential break-ins
The southern part of Takanini is the runner up in this disgraceful list. Takanini is home to many businesses and homes, being a large industrial area. The sprawling nature of the area may be a factor in the high number of break-ins here.
Homai East
169 residential break-ins
This may be one of the worst places in Auckland to have a home, when looking at burglary statistics. Even though it is only number 3 on this list, it is a relatively small area, so the density of burglary is very high. Just like Takanini, it is located in South Auckland which is unfortunately traditionally a hotbed of crime.
Number of residential dwellings in Auckland
In 2022 there were over 600,000 residential dwellings in Auckland, compared to 540,000 in 2018. This is a growth of about 15,000 a year.
Analysing the rate of burglary
By doing a simple calculation it is possible to find the rate of burglary in Auckland as a whole. Obviously this will vary on a region by region basis, but this number gives an average burglary rate in the entire city and its outskirts.
With 16,857 burglaries spread of 600,000 dwellings, this works out to an average of 2.81%. This means that over the course of a year, your chance of getting robbed once is 2.81%.
In other words this is 1 in every 36 houses approximately.
Conclusion
1 in 36 is not a great chance. That means that in virtually every classroom on average, one student will have suffered a burglary. Or one for every busload of people. The answer to Auckland’s burglary problem may be found in widespread CCTV installation, as a deterrent and a weapon to fight criminals in the act and in court.
There are many measures you can take to safeguard your home and your family. From fences and upgraded locks, to smart security systems with CCTV and alarm sensors. With crime rates only continuing to rise, it is time to take your home security seriously and make sure you are protected.
