Rambus takes up Arm’s CryptoCell and CryptoIsland IP

Rambus, perhaps best known for patent litigation, has acquired the CryptoCell and CryptoIsland Root of Trust technology from Arm. In the future, these technologies will be offered as part of Rambus’ own security IP portfolio.

Existing client licenses from Arm for this IP won’t be impacted, yet semiconductor configuration groups will hereon permit this IP straightforwardly from Rambus, the organization said.

The extension of its current Information Very still product offering with the Arm CryptoCell and CryptoIsland IP will mean more decisions for clients hoping to construct secure framework on-chip (SoC) units with guaranteed Base of Trust plans, Rambus said.

CryptoIsland creates an isolated enclave for secure processing by integrating a subsystem around a CryptoCell and including its own processor and software stack. CryptoCell is a security subsystem that provides root-of-trust cryptographic services for a device.

The CC-312, CC-712, and CC-713 products in the CryptoCell portfolio are designed to provide key management and encryption functions for SoCs based on Arm’s Cortex-M and Cortex-A cores. For a variety of IoT market applications, Rambus stated that these will now be available alongside its own RT-1xx Root of Trust cores.

In the meantime, the Rambus RT-6xx Root of Trust series will be offered alongside the CryptoIsland CI-300 core. Rambus stated that Smart Cards, Mobile Application processors, and 5G Modems are anticipated to be the most prevalent use cases.

Arm and Rambus’s agreement’s terms were not made public. A spokesperson for Arm informed us of our inquiry: This is a contract for licensing. A license agreement that grants Rambus the rights to sublicense and modify the intellectual property will now be available for the CryptoCell and CryptoIsland product families.

However, the statement made by Rambus suggests that Rambus will now be providing Arm’s security IP with ongoing support, maintenance, and development. We have sought clarification from the company.

We also asked Arm about the reasons behind this move, and it sent us the same statement as Rambus included in its announcement, which came from Arm fellow and VP of Technology Strategy Andy Rose.

Similar to Arm, Rambus is an intellectual property (IP) company that licenses its technology to other semiconductor producers. Additionally, it produces a few of its own DDR3/4/5 chips. It was the maker of the RDRAM memory innovation, and acquired reputation in the past for different patent encroachment arguments against memory organizations specifically. The company introduced a PCIe 6.0 Interface Subsystem design for use in silicon products from third parties last year.
