The National Basketball League (NBL) is trying to establish itself as one of the top international basketball leagues outside the NBA. The league’s global expansion strategy is currently being discussed by NBL Director and Board Member Nikola Milivojevic, who is leading that growth.

In an interview with RG.org, I discussed new ownership partnerships and the future of its Next Stars program. According to Milivojevic, the league’s growing credibility has been strengthened by the presence of prominent basketball players.

“Having legends like Carmelo [Anthony] and Kenny [Smith] believe in our vision is massive,” he said. “They started as ambassadors but are transitioning into ownership roles, which speaks volumes about their trust in the NBL’s future.”

The NBL’s endorsement is significant because Anthony and Smith, who are both respected NBA veterans and media figures, are involved. The league’s potential as a global basketball powerhouse is clearly communicated by their participation.

“Since launching, we’ve had nine players drafted, and more are coming,” Milivojevic added. “Lopez and Daniels could be top 10 picks, and we’re exploring a dedicated Next Stars team to expand the program further. Add in NIL dynamics, and we’re well-positioned to continue attracting both international and domestic talent.”

NBL’s Next Stars program has been a successful initiative that serves as a development platform for elite young prospects seeking a pathway to the NBA. LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey, and Ousmane Dieng are all alumni who have proven that the NBL is a legitimate start for basketball careers around the world.

By providing a competitive environment and professional structure, the league has positioned itself as a viable alternative to the U.S. college system and other international circuits. Milivojevic stated that the NBL is expanding nationally with the intention of adding two additional teams.

“Our immediate focus is domestic expansion. We’re preparing our 11th and 12th teams, and those projects alone will have global impact because of the people and investment behind them,” he shared.

Milivojevic reiterated that the league’s focus is on strengthening its foundation at home while considering expanding into the Asia-Pacific region.

“Looking longer-term, expansion into Asia-Pacific is possible, but for now we’re concentrating on strengthening our base in Australia and New Zealand. These next teams will raise the league’s profile globally without us leaving our borders.”

The NBL’s strategic approach of balancing ambition with sustainability has resulted in its steady growth. The foundation for long-term success is being laid by the league through the attraction of high-profile investors, the development of top-tier talent, and the enhancement of its domestic presence. As Milivojevic and the NBL leadership continue to refine their global vision, the message is clear: the NBL is not merely following the basketball world’s evolutionist’s helping shape its future. The league is positioned to become a crucial player in the global basketball arena with the convergence of credibility, investment, and international talent.

Milivojevic and the NBL leadership are not just responding to changes in global basketball, they are actively working to influence its direction for the future.

As Milivojevic and the NBL leadership further develop their international strategy, it is evident that the NBL is actively contributing to the advancement of global basketball, rather than simply adapting to its ongoing changes.
