MEET YPSILANTI ICON, PAT 2 DOPE

What first got you into music?
I’ve always loved sounds in general but I know it started with my dads vinyl, every Saturday morning when we would clean he’d have Motown, classical, funk, or something current playing. I also played the trumpet from 4th-8th grade which taught how to read music.
Who inspired you to make music?

I really started producing BeeTz(Beats) on Fruity Loops because I wanted to make music for me and my friends to Krump too. We would hear about parties around school and go there to dance battle people. Throughout middle school I listen to a lot of Three 6 Mafia, 50 cent, and Wu tang but listening to MF DOOM really put my mental pen to a pad.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Experimental Underground, emotional space stoner punk hip hop. I make beats that are dark with streaks of light, with my writing I usually take real life situations I’ve been in or observed and find some creative way to expand it or express it. I smoke a lot of weed so usually there’s a smoking theme present haha.
What is your creative process like?
I’ll start by smoking some weed and pipe tobacco spliffed while listening to music or samples for inspiration. I’ll ask myself what mood am I in? Then I’ll put together a drum pattern that’s dope and flip a sample that’s doper for about 4-8 bars. If it’s catches me then I immediately start humming a tune or melody until I find words to fill in the blanks. I’ll either record a reference in my phone or on Fruity Loops to lock in cadence and energy. What ever emotion I put into the beat draws out the lyrical content.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Madlib on some Champion Sound ish or producer High Klassified. Hunting down Cool Calm Pete is a life goal and I’d also resurrect Orchestrator Percy Faith to make some bangers.
If you could go open a show for any artist who would it be?
Probably Kendrick Lamar or someone like Curren$y
What is one message you would give to your fans?
You are a infinite source of energy and you can spend life recharging or depleting.
What is the most useless talent you have?
I can make a water droplet sound with my mouth.
Do you sing in the shower? What songs?
Yeah haha and I usually sing, “It wasn’t me” by shaggy
“Caught me butt naked banging on the bathroom floor Oh!” and Sade, “Kiss of life”.

What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?
Selling drugs and being a Skate Rat skateboarding around the world.
Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues?
I’ve performed in 5 states in the US and 4 counties in Europe. My favorite venues are the blind pig in Ann Arbor and this old hardcore band venue called Modern exchange near Detroit.
