Making the best use of Chip-on-Board (COB) LEDs

With technological advancement, there are so many new things coming up that probably not many people are aware of. Talking of which chip-on-board leds is also one of them. It is one of the finest yet advanced entrants that have been introduced in the field of LED. There have been quite many drawbacks of using LED but with Chip on board, an individual can save a lot of money on the energy bills. Also called COB, this type of option is mounted at the LED chip bare side which is in direct contact. It can then substrate to create LED arrays.

The evolving LED technology:

The technology of LED has grown to quite a great extent. It has improved in terms of performance and has also been creating some better use cases. This is one of the reasons why the LED is a versatile option. Besides, it is not just limited to the powerful light source as compared to the traditional incandescent lights but also has got many other uses. Primarily, people prefer to go with such a choice since it is an effective light source and can last longer maybe like 25 times longer, and don鈥檛 even consume much of the energy at all. LED is available in different types, models and one of them is the Chip on Board LED while the other one is the surface mounted device which is also popular by the abbreviation SMD

What is a COB LED?

Moving on to the chip-on-board leds, it is the choice mounted on the LED chip and is directly in touch with a substrate. It helps in creating efficient LED arrays. The COB Led is a new concept and quite an advanced one which is why it has grabbed the attention of many people over quite some time now. Besides, it has got some notable advantages to offer which makes it more superior to the old LED.

Focusing on the advantages, well there are many but before that one must understand what exactly it does. To be precise, it is a multiple LED chip that is well bonded directly for subtracting by the manufacturer for creating a single module. As the individual LED is used in the Chip on board, this means, those are the chips and not packed traditionally. It is even possible to mount the chips in such a manner that it would take less space while providing better potentiality of the chip that is being achieved from the LED.

Advantages of COB LEDs

Thechip-on-board leds are said to be multi-chip packed. This means the light which is emitting on a spot of the COB Led is likely to have quite light sources at the same spot as compared to any standard LED. This would result in increased output for every square inch.

Since it uses a single circuit with only two contacts for energizing different diode chips it houses, it can be of great help. This would lessen down the requirement of the components for every LED chip for the right operation. Besides, the reduced components along with traditional LED being eliminated can also lessen down the generation of the head from every LED chip.

COB Led is also capable of lessening down the failure rates. This states that the spot soldering of the individual LED chip may not be important as every chip is mounted directly on the substrate. If the amount is small of the welding point, it would eventually result in a low failure rate.

Other advantages of COB LEDs include:

路     A highly compact

路     High uniformity

路     Small size design

路     Greater intensity

路     A simpler single circuit design

路     Superior thermal performance

路     Improved stability

路     Better reliability

How do COB LEDs differ from SMD LEDs?

Now another concern that many people often have while getting the chip-on-board leds are what makes it different as compared to the SMD. Well, the surface-mounted device is one of the common LED types that can be found in the market. But in the case of the COB, this LED has been on market recently. SMD is said to be fused permanently to the printed circuit board and is quite known due to its versatility. Whether it is the string lights, light bulbs, or even the controllers of the video game, these are just some fine examples of SMD that are commonly found.

One of the distinct features that an individual cannot deny is the number of contacts and diodes number which it uses. This is likely to have different contacts and maybe up to three diodes on the single-chip itself. Each one will come with its circuit and have its cathode and anode. This eventually can lead even to six contacts in one chip easily.

In terms of configuration, SMD has said is quite versatile. The SMD LED comes in blue, red, green diode and is said to be useful for creating virtually any color on the spectrum. It thus adjusts the output level. In contrast to this, the COB led may not help create the bulbs that could be color-changing. This is simply because of the design of a single circuit that would use two contacts for creating the color-changing effect. In such cases, different channels are even needed.

In the case of a chip on board LED, it may not change the color which has it is used in limited applications if compared to SMD. However, it is quite helpful when there is a requirement of ultra-bright LED light such as handheld rechargeable torches and even phone torches to name some.

Chip-on-board leds is used for a wide range of applications. Since such devices can also be used for high output general light, the primary need for such LED will be quite of the solid-state lighting replacement for metal halide lamp in some of the options like street light, high bay lighting, and downlights to name some. Its use in different applications has eventually led many designers to come up with new launch using it.
