On the day of Shivratri, perform pooja by wearing blue or white clothes. By doing this, you get special fruit. Worshiping Shiva in yellow, red or green clothes is also fruitful.

On Shiva Puja on Mahashivaratri, Lord Shiva should never offer broken Akshat or rice. It is believed that broken rice is considered impure and it is inauspicious to offer it in worship. It is said that during any poojan, whole and unblemished must be offered. If there is no such rice in the house, do not offer it intact in the worship of Shiva.

Do not offer a party

People mainly offer Tulsi Dal during Vishnu Pujan. But offering Tulsi during the worship of Shiva is considered completely forbidden. Tulsi is considered as Vishnu Priya and it is believed that Lord Shiva is the eldest of Tulsi, so do not forget to offer Tulsi on Shivling. It is auspicious to offer Bel letter mainly in the worship of Lord Shiva.

Do not abhishek with coconut water

Never do the consecration of Shiva Linga with coconut water. The coconut is addressed as Mata Lakshmi. Therefore, it is believed that coconut should not be anointed with water.

Do not worship with conch shell

It is considered taboo to use conch during Shivpujan on Mahashivaratri. It is said that a legend is famous behind it. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva killed a demon named Shankhchud, who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, conch is used in the worship of Vishnu ji whereas the use of conch is completely forbidden in Shivpujan.

Apply sandalwood paste

During the worship of Shiva, sandalwood should be applied mainly on the forehead of the Shiva idol or on the Shivling. It is said that kumkum or vermilion should not be used in Shiva worshiping.

This is how to worship Shiva (Mahadev)

    On the day of Maha Shivaratri, get up early in the morning and take a quick bath and clean the place of worship.

  1. Take a Shivling bath with milk, curd, honey and Ganges water.
  2. Put the idol of Shiva and Parvati ji on a clean checkpoint and take a bath.
  3. Apply sandalwood to Shiva and apply vermilion to Mata Parvati.
  4. After bathing the Shiva lingam, offer a bell leaf and apply sandalwood paste.
  5.  Worship Shiva by observing the fast during the day.
