LODHRAN, PUNJAB — A devastating train derailment occurred early Sunday morning near Lodhran Railway Station, involving the Awam Express traveling from Peshawar to Karachi. At least two passengers were confirmed dead, and over 20 others sustained injuries when six coaches of the train derailed.
Rescue teams from Rescue-1122 and local police responded promptly, evacuating passengers and providing medical assistance. Twenty-two injured individuals were transported to District Headquarters Hospital in Lodhran, while two critically injured passengers were transferred to Bahawalpur for advanced treatment.
Initial reports suggest that a brake failure may have contributed to the derailment. However, the exact cause remains under investigation. This incident marks the third train derailment in Punjab this month, highlighting concerns about the safety and maintenance of Pakistan Railways.
Federal Minister for Railways, Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the accident and directed that a report be submitted within seven days. He emphasized the need for urgent reforms in railway infrastructure to prevent such tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue, the affected families await justice and accountability.
