Learn The Different Types Of Video Games And Their Subgenres

Date:

Over the past few years, the video gaming world has enjoyed a steady stream of new games and adventures. The rapid propagation is mainly informed by the developer’s desire to exploit and unlock the intricate world of gameplay. Video game genres often feature games with similar characteristics and not so much about the storyline. One of the games spawned into different video gaming genres and merchandise is the Star Wars series. A case in point is the miniaturized Star Wars Legion Clone Wars that ushers players into an enchanting new era of epic miniature battles in the Star Wars galaxy. A package features 39 nicely sculpted, unpainted plastic miniatures, where you get to play on the side of the galactic republic or the separatist alliance. You also get to join forces with famed characters like Obi-Wan. Read more about Star Wars Legion clone wars for tips on how to lead troops into the galactic battle of clone wars. Here are different types of video games and their subgenres:

Role-Playing Games

The hugely popular role-playing games commonly referred to as RPGs usually depict fantasy settings cast in the medieval era. The games are influenced by sci-fi fantasy and cultural infusions. Most of the themes at play are either Western or Japanese-inspired. The main types of RPG games include Action RPG, Tactic RPG, MMORPG, Sandbox RPG, First-Person Party-based RPG. Adopted from the old-style text-based initial Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs), we now have Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG) that features throngs of players that actively work together to achieve a specific objective. The highly immersive and engaging Sandbox RPG games are designed to give players the freedom to roam through the gameplay environment in search of adventure.

Action Games

Action games put the player in control of the play. For the most part, the player is expected to overcome the physical barriers or encounters that lay in wait. The games are highly delightful and easy to play as they carry popular themes.  One of the earlier releases included the Super Mario Bros. Popular subcategories of action games are Performer, Shooter, Stealth, and Beat-em Up. For Performer games, characters are always cast in action mode, for instance, running, walking, or jumping. Shooter video games typically depict players with some kind of weapon. Their central role is to defeat the enemy, tyrant, or opposing camp. Great examples are First-Person Shooters (FPS) games such as Call of Duty.

Action-Adventure Games

The domineering theme in action-adventure games is the two-game mechanics expressed by a long quest to victory or an adventure to overcome obstacles using collectible tools.  In some cases, actionable items are used. In the game of The Legend of Zelda, the player must surmount an 8-level dungeon with the help of several wisdom pieces. The action-packed adventure primarily focuses on discovering the loot and exploration. Popular subgenres of action-adventure games are Survival Horror and the Metroidvania type games. The latter is a basic game requiring the player to find the right tool or weaponry to advance. Doing so translates typically to better weapons upgrade and more combat power.

Simulation Games

Simulation-themed games all focus on mimicking reality and fiction reality. The subgenres include Life Simulation, Vehicle Simulation, and Construction and Management Simulation. Vehicle simulation video games portraying racing and flight simulations usually showcase the real experience one would get while driving a race car or flying a plane. For more action-packed role-play, the gaming vehicle may be armed for combat. A great example of a flight simulation game is Space Flight. Life or social simulations games such as SimCity give players control over varied aspects entrenched in artificial life. The player is allowed to change several things, including the ecosystems and genetics. In the construction and management simulation games, players are charged with managing construction and day-to-day aspects of the city, such as street planning and enforcement of the zoning rules.

Sports Games

Simulated games do not come better than sports games. The games are played against a computer-controlled subject who may take the form of a live competitor. Popular sports motifs include soccer, basketball, football, and golf. Also featured are Olympic games like pool, swimming, and skiing. Some of the most engaging subgenres of sports games are Racing Sports, Team sports, Sport-based Fighting, and Team Sports. Team Sports are among the first video gaming genres to hit the market. Their popularity stems from their ability to recreate realism, live sports engagement, and simulate real games. Racing simulated games include classics such as Arcade Pole Position and relatively recent releases like Gran Turismo. Players participating in simulated racing games compete with other players or the clock.

Adventure Games

Unlike most other games that follow a fashioned storyline, adventure games follow a scripted style of play. That is essentially storytelling taken a notch higher. Players enjoy the game by interacting with other characters and the play environment. The goal of the layer is to solve puzzles using the clues provided. Every good play creates a progression path. However, adventure games are not as popular with conventional gamers because they do not carry action themes. Popular subgenres of adventures games include Text Adventures, Real-time 3D and Graphic Adventures. From the outset, Real-time 3D video games are a more intense subgenre as they bring the games alive with immersive interactions.

Strategy Games

Strategy games have come a long way from their prior versions of board games. The game plan is for the player to use the tactics granted to beat the odds or overcome the challenges. A recent development in the strategy games arena is the adoption of real-time gaming as opposed to the traditional turn-based gaming progressions. Great examples of Strategy games include 4x, Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games, Turn-based Strategy, Real-Time Tactics games, Tower defense, Artillery, and Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). Artillery games feature a simple play format with two to three players engaged in a battle of tanks and infantry. The 4x games typically feature historical civilizations of humans and extraterrestrial beings. Two common themes in 4x games are exploiting and extermination.
