E-Way bill or Electronic Way Bill is an electronic bill generated for moving the goods from one place to another. E-Way Bill is to be generated in all the cases of transfer of goods, whether it is Inter-State or Intra-State. The movement of the goods can be done in the following ways:
- Buying of Goods.
- Selling of Goods.
- Transferring the Goods from one branch of the business to others.
It is compulsory for both the buyers and sellers of goods to generate the E-Way Bill, before moving the goods.
When should we generate the E-Way Bill?
If goods are supplied from one place to another (whether Inter-State or Intra-State) via transportation and a single bill of the goods exceeds the value of Rs.50,000 then, it will be mandatory for the buyers as well as the sellers to generate the E-Way Bill.
The above-mentioned amount of Rs.50, 000 is the amount mentioned on your invoice. The invoice can be either your Tax Invoice or the Delivery Challan. According to the new GST Law of 2019, the number of Goods exempted from GST must be excluded from the total amount.
In case, the distance of the goods supplied Inter-State is not more than 50 km., then it will be optional to generate the E-Way Bill. Earlier, the distance was 10 km as per the GST Rules.
However, in some situations, it is compulsory to generate the E-Way Bill, even if the amount does not exceed Rs.50, 000. When the goods are supplied for Job Work like the transfer of a product to complete the goods. Delivery Challan is made for the Job Work Movement of Goods.
Who is Liable to issue the E-Way Bill?
As per the law, the authority to generate the E-Way Bill is assigned to both the consignor and consignee who are supplying the goods. The E-Way Bill is made by the Seller of the goods transfers or sold. In case, the seller is not registered under GST, the buyer will have to generate the bill.
The validity of E-way Bill
In the case of Common Motor Automobiles: If the distance is less than 100 km, the validity will be for 1 day. However, if the distance exceeds 100 km, the validity also extends to 1 more day.
In the case of Large Motor Automobiles: If the distance of goods transferred is less than 20 km, the validity will be for 1 day. However, if the distance exceeds 20 km, the validity also extends to 1 more day.

Procedures to generate E-Way Bill
Follow the steps discussed below to generate the E-Way Bill online:
Step 1: Visit the official website of www.gst.gov.in.
Step 2: Select the “E-Way Bill System” option from the dashboard of the GST Portal.
Step 3: After that, click on the first hyperlink option that states “Click here to go to e-way Bill Portal” and click on the Proceed button.
Step 4: You will be directed to the E-way Bill Portal. Look for the login option on the top right corner and click on it.
Step 5: Enter the user ID, Password and captcha and click on the Login button.
Step 6: From the new page appeared on the screen, Choose the E-Way Bill option from the top left corner. After that, select the “Generate New” option.
Step 7: Fill the Form as per you’re the need of the Bill generation.
- Choose the Outward option under the type of transaction for the seller.
- Choose the Inward option under the type of transaction for the Buyer.
- Select the sub-type, document type, document number and date as per the requirement.
- Select From/To if you are a seller.
- Select To/From if you are a buyer.
- Lastly, fill all the details related to the items transferred. It includes name and description of the product, HSN code, Unit and Quantity of the Products supplied Taxable value and different tax rates and Cess.
- Fill the details of the transporter-like his name, ID, Doc. No. and date of the transfer. Also, the number of the vehicle is to be mentioned.
Step 8: Lastly, click on the submit button and your bill will be generated.
You can also use the option of an SMS or Android App for generating the E-way Bill.
