All you need to know about the LiFi technology and India

One of the most crucial needs of the hour is uninterrupted connectivity and communication and as the demands of growing global communication and data connectivity are increasing, the existing wireless technology with the radio frequency spectrum is not enough to cater to these demands. The WiFi technology that uses radio waves to transmit the data has speed and security vulnerabilities and there is a need to find an alternative to fill this data communication gap and the light fidelity technology is one such ray of hope that might have the answer to this problem.


What is light fidelity technology? 

LiFi is one of its kind of revolutionary technology that has the potential to change the world with its amazing benefits. It is a fully networked optical wireless technology that uses the light spectrum rather than radio waves to transmit data. Furthermore, it is a cost-effective technology compared to WiFi and has unlimited possibilities and endless opportunities. 

The light spectrum is 1000 times wider than the radio frequency and that is the reason LiFi can offer high-speed internet access than WiFi. The history of LiFi 

Harald Haas, a professor at the University of Edinburgh coined the word light fidelity in 2011 in a Ted Talk and discussed in length about the future of this technology and its potential benefits and features. Harald Haas is also the co-founder and interim chief executive officer of pureLiFi, a pioneer in the LiFi technology-enabled communications. He added that LiFi enabled LED bulbs can transmit data faster than a WiFi network and has stated that the light fidelity technology can redefine the fields of Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and other technologies. 


LiFi in India 

Haas also has discussed the possibilities of light fidelity technology in a country like India and stated that India can benefit a lot by adopting this superior technology. The two main points where LiFi technology can be very beneficial for India are: 


Connecting rural and unexplored communities with the internet 

The internet is the inseparable part of the new age civilization and has immense opportunities for people for personal or professional gains. However, in India, there is a huge chunk of areas and villages where the internet has not reached yet due to the huge costs of reaching there through fibre networks. The modern digital world is a new term for millions of people.


In such areas, the light fidelity technology can be bliss as it does not require fibre networks to connect, but a simple LED bulb that is LiFi enabled. Also, if the electricity is an issue to consider, LiFi technology can be combined with solar cells as receivers for communication access. The internet availability can help change the lives of people from rural areas and they too can be a part of the Indian growth story.


Smart Manufacturing 

Also, Haas told that the Indian manufacturing scene can be revolutionized by the light fidelity technology. The Indian manufacturing scene is still in its infancy as it does not utilize all the potential it has. However, with the right technology and technique, the scene can be changed for the better. Haas specifically discussed Smart LiFi powered robots and machinery and equipment to improve the manufacturing processes and increase the production and capacity levels.

LiFi: a new beginning in India 

The Indian Ministry of Information Technology has an autonomous scientific society called Education and Research Network (ERNET) which has conducted a pilot test on the light fidelity technology, in association with IIT Madras and Philips India, to check the impact and results of the LiFi.
