Keffiyeh: The Unifying Symbol of Palestine

The Keffiyeh scarf is a symbol of Palestine and used to be worn by many people in the Middle East. The Keffiyeh has been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until recently that we started calling this headpiece a Keffiyeh. This piece of cloth was originally called a shemagh, arab scarf or yamegh. This article will discuss when the Keffiyeh became popular as well as its history and what it means to wear one today.

The Keffiyeh was originally known as the shemagh. The first mention of it can be traced back to Babylonian times in Mesopotamia, when Assyrians used them during war and wear for protection against dust storms. They were also worn by Sumerians who invented the Shemagh head cover about 4000 BC-2500 BC. The Keffiyeh was also worn by Prophet Mohammd (pbuh) who received the shemagh from Archangel Gabriel and it has been a headwear staple in Muslim culture ever since then.

The Keffiyeh became popular among Palestinians when Yasser Arafat adopted it as his trademark piece of clothing. He wore one in 1948 as a symbol of Palestinian nationalism and to hide his weapons. After this, Keffiyeh became the uniform for all Palestinians.

The Keffiyeh is now worn by many people from the Middle East because it has been unifying symbol across different cultures. Wearing a Keffiyeh can also symbolize different things. For instance, those who wear Keffiyehs in solidarity with Palestinians show that they are against the occupation of Palestine and support Palestinian independence from Israel. There is no one Keffiyeh style or color because there’s so many culture groups around the world that use them for various reasons
