In addition to journalism, Mafidul is providing assistance to the poor and helpless by going door to door
Journalist Md Mafidul Islam Sarkar, Rangpur district correspondent of the Daily Sun, has distributed vegetable seeds and saplings worth more than Tk400,000 among vulnerable farmers in the district, with support from local donors.
As part of the initiative, he provided high-quality Alif Seeds vegetable packets along with 40,000 brinjal saplings and 10,000 cauliflower saplings free of cost to poor farmers. Mafidul has been personally delivering these items door-to-door, a method that has inspired many others in the community to adopt similar practices in their own social welfare activities.
Speaking about his work, Mafidul said he began delivering support directly to people’s homes in 2005.
“I saw how helpless people would wait for hours just to receive a Tk100 blanket. I wanted to bring a meaningful change to that system. It is encouraging to see political leaders now also going door-to-door to help people,” he said.
With donor assistance, he is currently distributing vegetable seeds along with packets of fertiliser and two-kilogram paddy seed varieties to disadvantaged farming households.
Every week, the journalist also organises a khichuri feast for children. To bring joy to young participants, he arranges various competitions and offers gifts to all participating children.
In addition to his reporting work for the Daily Sun, Mafidul has long been engaged in humanitarian efforts supported by local donors. His wide-ranging activities include weekly khichuri programmes for children, winter blanket distribution, providing annual educational materials to underprivileged children, and supplying a week’s worth of groceries—including rice—to distressed families. He even arranges special chicken pilau meals for impoverished households.
Mafidul has also launched a tree sapling distribution programme for students across all primary schools in Pirgachha upazila, a move that is helping raise awareness about environmental conservation.
He said his initiatives are made possible through the generous support of local donors. From 2026, he plans to distribute school bags alongside educational materials to students every year.
Mafidul’s continuous humanitarian activities have earned widespread praise among local residents, demonstrating how small, sustained acts of compassion can bring meaningful social change.
He expressed gratitude to those supporting his efforts, including retired Colonel Abdul Baten, Mawlana ATM Azam Khan, Savar-based award-winning poet Elora Soma, Nigeria expatriate Suman Chandra, Alif Seeds owner Belal Hossain, fertiliser trader Rajon, Agri Fast owner Shariful Islam, Patuakhali’s Farhad Hossain Shikder, Dr Rowshan Ara, and several other regular local donors. At the same time, he is working in association with various domestic and foreign social organizations, including the social organization Sabuj Bangladesh.
