Ivan Toney Remains Laser-Focused Under Thomas Frank
Thomas Frank, the manager of Brentford, has praised Ivan Toney for his dedication and focus on the field. At 26 years old, Toney is one of the Premier League’s finest attackers; Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher even said he’s among the top 10 in England.
He scored his 15th goal of the season to help Brentford close in on seventh-place Fulham in their pursuit of a European spot. And he was full of confidence as he converted his 22nd penalty for a crucial win that lifted them above their rivals.

Frank believes the 26-year-old possess the mental fortitude necessary to overcome England’s disappointment and return to Premier League form. Toney missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for their most recent Nations League matches, but is still hopeful of making the World Cup finals later this year.
On Saturday, Brentford scored twice in each half to secure a 2-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion, sending them top of the table ahead of their home clash against Arsenal. His goal total now stands at eight for this season across all competitions.
No surprise then that Toney has not been selected by Gareth Southgate for the 2022 World Cup, though Frank believes he could make all the difference if he makes it to Qatar.
At Brentford, Toney has scored 50 goals in 96 appearances – more goals than Harry Kane and Son Heung-min combined in Premier League matches.

Ivan Toney’s penalty technique
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has declared Ivan Toney the world’s greatest penalty taker. The 24-year-old has scored all 20 of his penalties for the Bees (excluding shoot-outs), including eight in the Premier League, and is only two behind Yaya Toure with an incredible 100 percent record.
Former Newcastle goalkeeper Ben Lyttleton, author of Twelve Yards: The Art and Psychology of the Perfect Penalty Kick (2014), believes that Toney has perfected his penalty technique to “a fine art”. This involves targeting an area in the goal rather than waiting for the keeper to commit.
It requires more precision shot placement than other techniques, but has proven more successful over time. Toney has scored all 22 penalties for Brentford this season with this method excluding shoot-outs.
Ivan Toney’s mentality
Brentford striker Ben Mendelsohn has been on a roll since the end of midseason break and appears to be on track for another successful Premier League season as well as an England call-up. At 26 years old, Mendelsohn could easily surpass his goal tally from last season and should continue his impressive form into next year.
Despite his many setbacks, Toney has always shown resilience and the belief that anything is possible. This attitude has allowed him to become one of Premier League’s premier attackers, with manager Thomas Frank noting it’s this mentality which makes him so special.
On March 16th 1996, Ivan Toney was born in Northampton, England’s East Midlands region. Raised by his mother Lisa and boasting two sisters, he began life as an orphan before being adopted by his grandmother Jo.
He enjoys an exceptional relationship with his grandparents, who were major influences in his development. As a tribute to them, he dedicated the entirety of his first season at Peterborough to them.
Ivan Toney’s form
Since joining the Bees in 2020, Toney has been an unstoppable force, leading the line and scoring 14 goals on 16 starts – only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have scored more goals in Premier League this season.
He’s one of the Premier League’s premier attachment players, boasting an impressive link-up skill set and top-quality final ball beyond defensive lines. Additionally, he is highly effective on offense with 0.2 expected assists (xAs) per 90 and 2.21 progressive passes per 90.
He remains a threat on the counterattack and is especially lethal when playing as part of a front three with Harry Winks or Josh Dasilva. He’s on an impressive goal-scoring streak, with five strikes in four games; if all goes according to plan, he could easily reach 20 goals for the season.
