It’s Not Too Late to Prepare Your Home for the Summer

Even if summer is still months away, you should start working on preparing your home for the hottest season of the year. You can continue any of the home improvement projects you started at the beginning of spring. You should also make sure that the conditions at home are ideal for the coming season. So, here are some things you can do to prepare your home for the summer.

Clean the Windows

The windows and window screens may be filled with dirt and grime from the previous season. Therefore, you should make sure to clean them thoroughly. If you have sliding windows, you can remove them and clean them on a flat surface. Using a microfiber cloth with disinfectant is great for cleaning windows, as it doesn’t leave streak marks or scratches.

You can also fill up a spray bottle with disinfectant and use a squeegee to clean your windows. As an alternative, you can grab a bucket filled with a soapy solution. Move the squeegee in consistent vertical or horizontal strokes to ensure that the soapy water solution is applied evenly.

Check Airflow in the House

Ensuring good airflow in the house is another way for you to prepare for summer. Aside from keeping the home cool, good ventilation in the house also prevents the accumulation of virus particles in the house. To facilitate airflow, you can let the ceiling fans turn counterclockwise. This change in direction allows cold air to enter the home.

Additionally, you can check the filters of their air conditioning unit. If there’s a need to replace them, you should do so to ensure they can suitably provide cool air in the house. Ideally, you should replace the filters every 90 days. However, if you have a pet at home, you should replace the filters of the AC unit every 30 or 60 days.

Keep in mind that shops and repair centers are typically busy during this season, so it’s best to have your AC units repaired in advance.

Work on the Exterior

You can trim the trees, mow the lawn, and make sure the plants get enough water. You can also check the gutter for any debris that you were unable to remove in spring. Checking areas and narrow spaces for leaves that have accumulated there throughout winter is another good idea.

You can also hire professionals to clean the chimney. Make sure that they inspect the firebox, smoke chamber, chimney liner, and damper. Sometimes, animals make nests there, so having someone remove them from the chute safely saves you time and effort.

You can also check the roof for any damage that happened during the cold season. You can look for cracks or leaks that may cause bigger problems in the future. This is especially important when thunderstorms start rolling in. Hire roofing specialists to check and fix any issues on the roof.

If you have wooden decks in the property, you can waterproof them to prevent it from wearing down when it gets wet. It may require at least two days for the waterproofing to ensure it settles on the deck. If you already applied waterproofing in the past, you may still need to reapply a waterproofing solution on certain spots.

Work on the Attic

The attic may not be on your list of things to work on to prepare for summer. However, it should actually be among the portions to check before summer comes. Installing a radiant barrier allows you to reduce summer heat, which is particularly useful if you live in an area where the climate is typically hot. Radiant barriers can help reduce cooling expenses by 5 to 10 percent.

Organize the Garage

You should also organize their garage and check the items stored inside. You can dispose of any items that have remained unused for a long time. Before putting anything back into the garage, you should clean the place to prevent pests from invading your garage.

Clean the Grill

Cleaning the grill before summer will prepare it for those weekend barbecues you’ll be having with your family and friends. You should make sure the grill does not have any leftover debris from the previous year. Use proper abrasives and solutions to scrub charred bits off your grill. However, make sure to use products that will not cause corrosion, especially in portions where you place your meats.

By making these preparations before the summer kicks off, you would not have to think about deep cleaning or replacing items and fixtures in your living space. This gives you more time to spend the season with your family and friends without having to worry much about repairs at home.
