You might expect a financial whiz that has started their own school for financial literacy to focus on bottom lines and strict monetary discipline. But, in the case of Life Changing Academy (LCA) Founder Marcia Smith, that is not the case at all.
She began the school after finding that many people were reacting to her social media posts about taking care of personal finances and using her experience to help others achieve the same results in their life. Soon, her new audience came directly to her for personal advice and tips. She realized how little many of them knew about the basics of finance.
She began a Facebook group, and many posts in it went viral. Soon enough, she realized it was her life’s mission to help others get out of debt, how to use credit that pays you, how every dollar needs a job and create the life you really want to live.
Helping Others Become Debt Free
One of Life Changing Academy’s main focuses is helping people get out of debt and what it will take to stay out of debt. It’s the first order of business before moving on to finance topics like saving, investing, and starting a business.
“The American educational system teaches you math, but it doesn’t teach you the basic financial knowledge most people need to change their lives. I have a problem with that. It’s not the teachers’ fault, it’s the system’s, so I decided to become the teacher,” she said of her academy.
She aims to show her students that financial wellness is far more than scrimping to pay off monthly minimum payments and living paycheck-to-paycheck. Instead, it starts with eliminating debt and building a new foundation of learning, cultivating discipline, creating life changing wealth strategies, and being strategic with your money.
Giving Freely to Those Around Her
Smith is generous by nature. That’s how and why she started Life Changing Academy. Her students describe her as caring and enthusiastic, getting personally involved in their lives and struggles.
She goes above and beyond in service of those around her, helping students repair existing businesses in financial turmoil, and she has even given investment properties as gifts to her students. “It’s all about uplifting others as you grow,” she said.
One of the selfless anecdotes that draw students to her program is a story she shared online about providing for her daughter’s future.
When her daughter turned 15 years old, Smith got serious about her financial fitness. She bought a brand new ultra-luxury car in her daughter’s name and listed it on Turo, a daily car-renting site. She also put her daughter’s name on five of her credit accounts so the teen would have an established credit history when she turned 18.
The multi-faceted financial plan goes further, too. The car rental profits pay the monthly car loan, and the remainder is invested in a dividend paying stock portfolio to her daughter’s growing net worth. The dividends from that account will pay for her child’s college education which eliminates the unnecessary debt called student loans.
