A V-neck tee can be an excellent addition to your summer wardrobe as long as you choose the right one and follow a few styling guidelines. It’s versatile, can be worn in endless ways, and even become a statement piece of your outfit.

However, many guys tend to avoid these t-shirts precisely because they worry about making mistakes and looking tacky as a result. Is there a dress code to follow, will I look outdated, and can I wear a V-neck with formal trousers are just a few of the questions guys have?

If you’re one of them, keep reading as we explore how to wear a V-neck tee without looking tacky.

A V-neck At Work

Let’s get one of the most burning questions out of the way – can you wear a V-neck to the office? The answer is yes if you choose the right one.

A V-neck with a shallow and a slim fit is an ideal piece of the smart-casual outfit consisting of the tee, chinos, slacks or khakis, a blazer or sport coat and dress shoes.

It’s an excellent substitute for your button-down shirts that are not the best choice in the summer (see: pit stains)

This combination works not only for work but also for your business lunches and dinners, meeting your in-laws or having a drink in town.

In our humble opinion, a V-neck is a better choice than a crewneck tee as it makes you look more put-together, elongates your body visually, adds a couple of inches, and hugs your figure nicely.

A V-neck For Leisure

V-neck is also the perfect choice for most of your leisurely activities, casual and even street-style outfits.

Pair it with your cargo pants and denim jacket for a stroll in town,

layer it under your button-down shirt, pair it with black denim for a 90s-inspired look, and have it as a base under your cardigans.

We love that so many great V-necks are available in amazing colors, the most versatile and stylish being navy, black, charcoal, olive, burgundy, maroon, grey and mustard yellow.

How To Avoid Looking Tacky

Okay, let’s get to the part where we discuss the most important things when shopping for and styling a V-neck.

Size and fit

First, you need to pay attention to the fit of your tee. You want one that hugs your body but isn’t too tight, yet you want to avoid too large tees that simply don’t work. Stick to your true size!

Sometimes even a shallow V neckline can look loose, so make sure it’s not sloppy.

The V cut depth

This may be the most important part to pay attention to. You don’t want a deep V cut that reveals your body hair or too much skin (yes, even if you live at the gym).

It doesn’t look good on anyone and is the definition of tacky. Your V should not plunge lower than 4 inches, but we recommend going up to 3 most.

Logos and graphics

Another thing that looks tacky is graphics and massive logos on your V-neck. You can get away with a tiny logo, but other than that, avoid anything with it because you don’t want to be a free billboard for the brand! Graphics also work better for crewnecks, and V-neck tees are the best monochrome.

Stretched out tees

Because of the particular neckline shape, V-necks tend to get stretched out sooner than other t-shirts. When that happens, it’s time to get a new one and use the old one as sleepwear.

Layering V-neck sweaters

The last no-no for wearing V-neck tees is layering them under V-neck sweaters. While it may seem like a logical choice, it’s actually a fashion faux pas, and you should wear a crewneck or a polo under your knitwear.
